why can usernames not have spaces anymore?

i tried changing my name to something else with spacing between words & it didn't work

& when i creating an account i wasn't able to put a space between words for the user

Fixed. It's supposed to block consecutive spaces but allow a single one.

It'd also be great if we could know exactly what's allowed now. The registration page states that alphanumeric characters and some punctuation is allowed, but the only allowed punctuation I could find is a period.
