It was a lovely fall afternoon. The sun was setting, causing a new tint of pink and orange to wash over the forest where the summer camp was set up.
"Camp Jabberwock," it was called.
it sounded cheerful but be warned reader. Names can be deceiving. If you don't believe me please read on.
The bus arrived as 4 campers poured out of the bus, Billy a overweight 13 year old that sits around and plays fortnite all day. He was wearing a grey hoodie with blue jeans. He also had sneakers. His backpack was massive and he struggled to carry it. Next was Riva, a shy 15 year old girl with black hair. She was wearing a grey sweater and black jogging pants, she didn't bring anything with her apparently, since she didn't have a backpack. She looked down and slowly got out of the bus, standing behind Billy. Then Jeff came out. A shy guy with very curly and fluffy hair. he was wearing a t shirt with a skull engraved on it and shorts. He was shivering, probably because it was cold. Then finally Rinnia stepped out, she's a very outgoing 17 year old. Everybody either wants to be her or be WITH her. She's the most popular girl at her school and dispite the stereotype she was pretty nice.
... A little to nice, to the point she freaked people out sometimes-
"Hello Campers!" The overjoyed camp counselor beamed. although his voice sounded like he'd lost his marbles beyond finding them.
He was a tall 23-year-old. He wore a cocoa brown button-up shirt and dark jeans with black sneakers. His brown hair is neatly combed back into a professional haircut. (That was being ruined by his hat.) His name tag reads "Mr. Fogg." He held out his hand for a handshake but instead shook his head vigorously. "No, no, I'll just introduce myself." He said it excitedly; he was bouncing on his toes in excitement. He grabbed his clipboard and started talking. "My name is Mr. Fogg, and this is Camp Jabberwock. Welcome!" He smiled, but there was something unsettling about the smile. It was like his whole being was just oozing happiness, but somehow it wasn't real. "You all have had a long drive, so I'm going to lead you all to the shared cabin you're going to be staying in!" Mr. Fogg says, leading the way to a small log cabin. nestled in a very dark corner of the woods. The place was pitch black, with the only source of light being the moon. Mr. Fogg pushed open the door, revealing a large circular room with four bunk beds. The mattresses were white, with navy blue stripes running along each side. There were two windows near the ceiling; one had been boarded shut, and another was slightly open, allowing the moonlight to spill inside.
"have fun." Mr. Fogg states, slamming the door shut. Riva jumped slightly at the noise, then sighed. She trudged towards the nearest bed and plopped herself down on top of the soft mattress. After laying her backpack on top of the blanket and kicking off her sneakers, she closed her eyes. She lay on top of the bed for 10 minutes before she decided to take out her phone. She had received a text from her mom with her contact labeled "Deadbeat mother." She didn't bother to check it and let her head fall back on the pillow, dropping her phone on her stomach. Then she heard movement. "Can you not sleep either?!" Rinnia asked, quickly climbing up the ladder of Riva's bunk bed, making her jump once again.
"DON'T...Do.....That-" She said, running her hands through her short black hair, that she does this instinctively whenever she's stressed. "Sorry!" Rinnia said playfully, as though she were fully aware of Riva's jumpy nature.
She flopped down next to Riva on her own bed. They both stared at the ceiling. "So..." Rinnia broke the silence. "What are we going to do tomorrow?" she asked. She seemed to be looking for an escape from the awkwardness of the situation they found themselves in. "Whatever the camp counselor says." Riva replied, inching away to politely indicate, "I wish to not speak at this moment; please get off my bed." Rinnia moved closer.
"So, have you met the other campers? They're sleeping right now, but I bet they're a ton of fun!" She whispered loudly, beaming with excitement.
"I think you should sleep." Riva finally stated, adjusting her rounded glasses. She turned her back to Rinnia, who rolled her eyes and flopped back onto her bunk. She pulled a green blanket up to her chin and stared at the wall again, listening to the quiet rustling of fabric and the creaks of the wooden bed frame. Soon enough, her eyelids began to droop. Riva sighed contentedly at the silence and followed suit; she fell asleep almost imminently. Little did they know that someone was lurking outside. Someone with ill intentions.
Someone wanted to hurt them.
