Maybe you already read it on the news, Today is Venezuela is happening several problems, rebellions against government, bla, bla, bla, and you know a fun fact? I'm Venezuelan, so i can tell you the history about how my country ended like that.
So this story starts in the year 1958, Venezuela used the richest country in South America, there's was prosperity and aconomical growth, thanks to the massive oil exportation. In that year, the dictator Marcos Pérez Jiménez was overthrown, and the political parties COPEI, AD, and URD signed the Pact of Puntofijo, this was an agreement about how to create a new democracy in Venezuela, have free elections, and that things.
So Venezuela turned into a bipartidist democratic system, where COPEI and AD switched the power constantly, the economy was still growing due the oil, and even with the corruption problems of the democratic system, there's still having prosperity for the Venezuela.
But, the Venezuelan economy was extremely dependent of oil, so in the decade of 1980s, the oil price in all the world fell, so the Venezuelan economy too, there was more poverty, corruption, unemployement and inflation, and in 1989, the Caracazo happened, it was a violent manifestation against president Carlos Andrés Pérez, and there was many death and injuried people.
in February 4th of 1992, an important figure would appear, Hugo Chávez, an army commander who leaded a coup against Carlos Andrés, but he failed, and he went to prison, and in November 27th of 1992, there was a second coup attemp, who also failed.
In 1994, the new president Rafael Caldera forgived Chávez, and set him free, Chávez decided to join politics, and went to 1998 presidential elections, he promised peace, equality and prosperity to a ruined Venezuela, so he could win the elections, and in 1999, he became the President of Venezuela.
He was a socialist with a several program of transformations for the country, so he changed the constitution, his political regime was called the "Bolivarian Revolution" in honour of Simón Bolívar, a general of the Venezuelan war of independence, so the name of the country was also changed to "Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela"
He started with social assistance programs called "Bolivarian Missions" with food, education, homes, etc... These programs were supported with the money of the oil, and they hired Cuban doctors, teachers, and other professionals, because Chávez was friend of the Cuban Dictatorship leaded by Fidel Castro. With the time, Chávez was turning more and more corrupt, he expropiated many companies, he faked many elections, he ruled until 2013, when he died, and designated Nicolás Maduro as the next dictator.
Chávez left the country in ruin, there was many corruption, authoritarism, poverty, nepotism, and when Maduro came, Venezuela officially turned into an autocracy, the opposition is chased, censored, and tortured by Maduro and the army, the country is ruined, there's hyperinflation, there's no basic products, and many social problems.
But, there's still hope, today Venezuelans are still standing, ready to resist... But of that i will talk in another blog...
As a brazilian, i hope for the best for all of our venezuelan brothers and sisters. It was never easy for us south americans in general, but the situation in venezuela is the past decade is really bad (from what i hear). If you ever want to talk privately lmk.
