In Thorium Wars, you play as humanity's last hope against an advanced race of machines, the Thorions. The game takes place in a variety of environments, including air, sea, land, and even space.
Thorium Wars stands out on the DSi shop for two reasons: its hefty price tag (1000 Points) and its gameplay: the first real shooter on the DSi. When you first play it, however, it can be pretty confusing since it throws right into the gameplay without a tutorial or anything like that. You can consult the help manual, but it in itself is overcomplicated and confusing. Once you get the hang of things, however, the controls are smooth and flawless (as long as you don't use the touchscreen mode. Trust me on this one). One of the game's unique aspect is the variety of vehicles available, and each one handles drasticly different than its counterparts. You'll have to learn them all, though, since even the "standard" gameplay difficulty is quite challenging. You have to move fast and complete your objectives, since in almost every level there are several drones that constantly circle you and lower your health. Those buggers are annoying as hell, and you might find yourself throwing your DSi down in exasperation because of them. The boss battles are also pretty hard, and will probably require several tries to beat.
Now, when it gets down to it, is Thorium Wars worth $10? With its challenges, plenty of levels, and re-playability, Thorium Wars offers a good gaming experience. 8/10.
