I found a place in HG/SS that tells you how to get free items:
Fly to victory road entrace.
Go south down ledges.
There will be a grassy area with two ways to go.
Take the left route and you will come to a house.
In the house is a book that says when and where certain item giving characters will appear.
Follow what the book says and Hey Presto!
However each person only gives you stuff once ever.
