In Spring of 2008 Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach South Carolina opened its doors for the first time anxiously awaiting a good first season. The park had 4 roller coasters, numerous flatrides and an ice rink for shows.
One attraction stood above them all.
Nights In White Satin: The Trip
I recently E-mailed the company behind what is considered by many the best darkride in the world, the Sally Corporation. They gave me all the information about the ride.
Sally Corp. was appoached by Hard Rock park to create a psycadellic darkride based on the famous Moody Blues song Night In White Satin. The ride's onboard audio is actually a rerecorded version of the song with Moody Blues and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra.
The ride itself consists of 8 trains or 16 cars that rotate a full 360° while on the ride. With six people per car, and twelve people per train, the ride had an output of 1000 riders per hour.
Now I present an in-depth description of this ride.
"Nights In White Satin, Never Reaching The End"
The cars travel into a room filled with silk curtians blowing in a gentle wind. Ghostly images are projected onto the curtians and the whole room glows slightly purple.
"Letters Are Written, Never Meaning To Send"
Cars travel through a steel door and into the next room.
"Beauty I've Always Missed, With These Eyes Before"
Cars swivle left and face a mural of a desolate landscape with a few trees and grass. At the line "Beauty I've Always Missed", the grass appears to sparkle brightly.
"Just What The Truth Is, I can't Say Anymore"
At this point the desolate landscape changes to a spiritual world with the help of black lights. The cars the turn 180°.
"Cause I Love You, Yes I Love You"
Cars pass several optical illusions inspired by backyard decorations as they spin in seemingly thin air. Also the riders pass cubes that change depth with the help of mirrors.
