Many of you probably know most of these, but you still might find some helpful things.

1. Start punching trees. Get as much bark as you can, probably at least 16-30. You should open up your inventory (i) and make them into planks/refined wood. Just pick up the stack by clicking it and put it in one square in the little 2x2. Then keep clicking the refined wood until the bark is gone. You can probably get more, but you should build a temporary shelter before nightfall. LEAVE A 1x1 WINDOW! But make sure everything else is closed off. You should probably just dig on the side of a mountain.

2. While waiting for sunrise, you should get mining. Pick up your stack and put one wood in each square of the 2x2 by right clicking with the stack selected. Place the new crafting table, and make a pick axe. This is what it should look like in the 3x3:

To make a stick, just put two pieces of the wood parallel to each other. Use about half of your wood, or maybe enough for 32-64 sticks. Make one wood pick and start mining downwards. After a while, you should have enough stone to make a stone pick! It should also be morning soon, so you should probably look for a good spot to settle or stay where you are.
