Leslie William Nielsen was a Canadian actor, born in Regina, Saskatchewan. He was the son of a Canadian Mounted police father and Welsh-born mother.
Nielson served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and later turned to radio. He received a scholarship to New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse, where he studied acting and dance.
He took bit parts in television and stage acting, eventually landing motion picture roles, most famously Forbidden Planet and The Poseidon Adventure.
Ultimately, he found his niche in comedies, starting with Airplane!. His acting career continued through the Naken Gun movies (based on the Police Squad television series), Mel Brooks's Dracula: Dead and Loving It, Mr. Magoo, 2001: A Space Travesty, Scary Movie 3, An American Carol, and many more.
Nielson died of complications from pneumonia in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
