Remember the good old days, when video games weren't trying to be virtual reality? When multiplayer wasn't versing someone online, but battling for the high score against a friend in Super Mario Bros? When 64-bit was what you needed to make everyone jealous? When people didn't complain about some grass looked 2D, but instead marveled at two lines on a screen.I'm TheRoyalNoob, and I'm here to tell you all about how video gaming began, and how it became what it is today.
Video games are classified in generations. The First Generation of video games lasted from 1972 to 1977,and this is what I'll be talking about today.
The Magnavox Odyssey was released in 1972,thus making it the first home video game console. It had 28 different game cartridges, all of which came with the console. The games were all the same thing, two lines on the screen moved by players 1 and 2, however each with a different set of rules, which would be learned from reading the instruction manual. The Odyssey came with screen overlays for your TV, to add 'graphics' to the game. Some games used dice, poker chips, and score sheets to assist in the gameplay. The Magnavox Odyssey Shooting Gallery game came with a light gun, much like the Nintendo Zapper or the Sega Phaser.
The Magnavox Odyssey had many successors in the following years, such as the Odyssey 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 2000, 2001, 2100, 3000, 4000,each with slight differences. Many people consider the Magnavox Odyssey2 to be the Odyssey's true successor, even though it came out after the other Odyssey's.
Stay tuned for Part 2 when I talk about the Atari Pong consoles.
