On Friday, March 11, 2011 at 05:46:23 UTC a magnitude 8.9 offshore quake the largest in Japan's history unleashed a 23-foot (7-meter) tsunami and was followed by more than 50 aftershocks for hours, many of them of more than magnitude 6.0. Tsunami waves generated by the massive quake hit Hawaii early Friday morning. The first waves crashed into the island of Kauai at 3:13 a.m. local time. Officials predicted they would experience waves up to 6 feet (2 meters).he number of fatalities was unclear, but Japan's Kyodo news reported at least 10 killed and numerous injured.
The quake prompted at least 19 countries and numerous Pacific islands to issue tsunami warnings. It was followed by powerful aftershocks that were felt in capital of Tokyo. More than 200-300 bodies were found and more are missing.
Damage in Japan is remarkable. Roads are destroyed, buildings are leveled and Nuclear power plants and oil refineries burst into flames. Soon after a wall of water began to pound Japan's coast causing for extensive damage and flooding.
But residents there continued to feel aftershocks hours after the quake. More than 30 aftershocks followed, with the strongest measuring 7.1.
I'll try to keep everyone updated on this Historic event that is unfolding.
