With all the growth DSiPaint / DSOperaSDK has seen in nearly a year, I've decided to start overhauling the layout. Both content and a traffic growth have led to increasing lag and a cluttered homepage. Upcoming features will just keep adding to that clutter and slow load-time, including forums more minigames, language chatrooms, and TMJ. Before it became too unbearable, I decided to break the homepage into separate pages with a centralized menu. Let me explain these changes to help with any confusion...
Accessibility The homepage and the sectional pages are all being designed for better accessibility without a stylus. Although the website is built for use on the Nintendo DSi Browser, some members have voiced concern that certain elements are not usable on iPhones, Droids, and Windows mobile, making access tougher when they do not have the DSi handy. While still keeping everything working 100% on the DSi, I am also making quick flipping and tapping with an index finger easy. This necessitated the use of icons instead of just text links.
Bookmarking We all have our favorite aspects of the website, be it the chatrooms, blogs, game shows, messaging, DSiPaint, etc. Thus, breaking the website into sections will allow for bookmarking of a favorite page. Then instead of having to hit the homepage each time, you can login directly at your favorite section.
Customization Originally, I was planning on setting up the homepage to allow sorting of the order sections would appear on login. Actually, about half of that code was in place. It was getting messy, though. One new plan for the overhaul was the ability for featuring favorites on the homepage, just under the section icons. Let's say you like to see featured blogs, your DSiPaint album, Minco Says, your mail inbox, and Chatroom TMJ. You can set those icons to show on the homepage whenever you login.
Branding First this website was DSOperaSDK.com because of the developer tools. Then the website became DSiPaint.com because of the painting. It has also become DSiChatroom.com. There are about 8 domain names for it. Branding has been difficult over the months because its direction has kept evolving. There has never been a title on the top of the homepage for that reason. By breaking the website into discrete sections, I can finally put to use the new brand I've had in mind for it: DSiUniverse.com.
Sponsorship I've been searching for a good ad sponsor for months, after Google dropped the site without warning. The ad revenue allowed for monthly contests and investment in growth. I found a few companies over the months that produced the funds, but I quickly dropped them due to inappropriate ads or slow server issues. Finally I have set up the website with AdMob: the biggest mobile ad website in existence at the moment. The revenue stream from it will help me to invest in development tools to continue growing the website. I would also like to bring back contests with real prizes like I did last year, including Nintendo Points cards and games. Since this has been brought up in the past: Do be aware that the sponsor brings in revenue for the, but do no just click every ad you see. If you see something you like, go ahead and check out the ad, but it does not good for the site if click fraud causes an advertiser to drop picking this website for a venue.
With some of these updates will be some temporary growing pains. for instance, the link to member profiles from the chatrooms had to be removed until I get the synching between this site and WiiOperaSDK back up. There may be some broken links or page errors that come up. If you notice any of those, let me know, and I will take care of them.
Once all these changes are in place, I hope that your experience on this website will be much better.
Let me know what you think of the changes, and feel free to provide any suggestions.
THE SITE IS AWSOME! XD hull youve really outdone yourself i mean who would have thought that just in july this site was barley known about now lots of people know about it! hull your great at this keep going and do what your good at ^_-
HEY great blog i think if u use some of the suggestions already posted you could make the site 10x btr, also how do u do bold lettering and can u do it on dsi?
NIICE Well i like how you broke down the site into diffrent pages -phums up- I might use that idea and use that on IDemon Hunter [www.idemonhunter.webs.com] Btw could you add that to you links at the bottom of the site?
Woah, ryke, those ideas are amazing.. I've always wanted a badge system or the thing that tells your friends what you are doing.. keep up the work hull !
1.. abillity to make a public and a friends only profile...
2... game client AND HOST update...[in the answer here box there needs to be the words .. ANSWER HERE .., the ability to present a members answer, and the abillyty to make ur rules come up ]
3.. keep it dsipaint dsiuniverse.. is a poop-name
4.member badges.. [perfect way for mods to point out the best members .. for a game master the badge that he could give to a member wold be great gameshow contestent. for chat mod. it would be''chatroom angel'' and so on, GREAT FOR BRAGGIN RIGHTS AND SELF-APRECIATION.. [the badge would be exhibited on a users homepage.
4. /hang --- /hang is a code u could type .it would invite any of ur friends who are online to the room their in [would be great in tmj also] .. or for the friends online section it says ''Johndoe[room:tmj]'' or ''HULLBREACH [painting in dsipaint]''
5...make ur own polls
6.. when u post a blog, get a high score, win a gameshow, get promoted , or update somethin it should alert ur online friends in a chat room. for example '' YOUR FRIEND nintendode JUST WON RYKEMANS GAMESHOE, CONGRATS''
Also, remember that Trouble Center suggestion I shot at you? That too.
I also think the site should be formatted so that vertical scrolling isn't needed. Example, DSiCade.
HULL - MAKE A PCPAINT.... ... I DONT USE DSIPAINT ON DSI... I USE PC...I HATE HAVING TO ZOOM IN TO SEE THE CHATROOMS... IF YOU MADE A PCCADE... IMAGIN THE POSSIBILITIES! sorry for caps.. i didnt know how to change them to lowercase so im keepng them like this
lotsa work ~_~ now, like nintendoftw mentioned, if the DS2 comes....what will be ? maybe DSOperaSdk can get two 'faces' the DS2 (resized to DS2, etc..etc..) and another for DS, but...its just far from DS2....but... nintendoftw, 1998? really...c'mon, this website is the best DSi compatible ever made, maybe it can look like '1998' in PC mmm....no offence but for DSi?! its perfect, stupid one who told its looking 1998, dumb conclusion, maybe he can do better, tell him to do better -.-
The focus for this website will always be the DSi... well, until the next generation comes out. I have no plans of implementing anything it cannot handle, like multi-touch, motion-sensing, or anything else. The games and apps will all be formatted for the exact dimensions of the DSi screen and processor speed. That being said, if a member wants to check messages or blog comments when a DSi is not available, I am making the website more accessible to do so.
-sigh- how bout you name it slickshady333isawesome.com? I'm just kidding.. But DSiUniverse? Really man? Not for me thank you I am and will always type in dsoperasdk.com to get here.. thats what i typed the first time i came to this site and what i will type the last time
Awesome! Do you think the blogs could be made into a window similar to the others, and sister sites, etc. can be a smaller link? That would make the main page extreme speed.
Pure awesomeness, Hull! Skunkman can't bother your awesomeness, now, btw: Weegee stole all his awesomeness! x] Add me as a friend please... if you aren't too busy.
