Jacob was huddled in the corner. He was still in shock over what he had heard. Crimes against nature. That's what they were being labled by the Council. Termination. Jacob shivered at the thought.
"I just don't understand... why do they want to... to kill us?" Jacob asked quietly. Lucas looked back at Jacob from his perch on the window's ledge. They were lucky, very few rooms had windows in the compound. Even fewer had decent views of the area beyond the walls of the compound.
"Come look at this" Lucas said motioning to the window. "Tell me what you see Whiskers." Lucas waited as Jacob looked outside and tried to understand what he meant.
"All I see are Hybrids and Humans doing normal stuff." Jacob said, stating the obvious with a baffled look. He didn't see what was so strange about it.
"Exactly. None of the Hybrids OUTSIDE of the Compound are being killed. It looks like we, the Hybrids IN the Compound, are the only ones with a death warrant." Lucas said frowning slightly. "But that still doesn't tell me anything... We need answers..."
Lucas paced the room, his tail slowly twitching back and forth. Jacob knew Lucas was completely focused on this now. The tail was a tell-tale sign. Jacob laughed inwardly at his pun.
Lucas suddenly stopped and headed for the door. "Come on Whiskers." He said, a determined look in his eyes. "We're getting answers!" Lucas exclaimed as he bounded out the door and down the hall.
"Lucas!" Jacob yelped jumping up. "Lucas! Wait up!" Jacob took off after his friend.
=A Few Moments Later=
"Director! Hey Director, open up! I gotta you some things!" Lucas shouted, pounding on the Director's office door. "Director! Director!"
"Um, Lucas? You might want to... want to calm down..." Jacob suggested nervously as cracks began appearing on the door. Lucas had unrivaled strength, but sometimes went overboard with it. 'Like now.' Jacob thought as the door crumbled apart.
Lucas snorted. "Reinforced steel my tail!" Steeping over the broken remains of the door, Lucas called out again. "Director?"
A cough from behind caused Lucas to whirl around and Jacob to squeak and jump straight up. The Director stood in the doorway. Or what was left anyways. He sighed and sat down at his desk.
"D-director! We're sorry about your door sir!" Jacob apologized quickly. He was panicing, the Director was nice and Jacob didn't want that to change.
"Uh, yeah, sorry about... smashing your door sir." Lucas apologized as well, sheepishly scratching his ears. He really should've stopped before the door broke. Oh well.
"Now what can I do for my favorite Hybrids today, hm?" The Director smiled jovialy, which considering his door was trashed, was a testament to his good nature.
"Yeah. We wanna know why only the Hybrids in the Compound are scheduled for termination. What's going on?" Lucas demanded. It was time for answers, and he going to get them.
The Director gulped. It was obvious that he was hiding something. He sighed. The time for secrets was over.
"Lucas, the truth is that every Hybrid in the Compound was genetically engineered. The Council fears you because they think you'll try and overthrow them." The Director explained.
"Sir! The Eraser sqaud has breached the Compound walls!" A voice crackled over the intercom on his desk. The Director's face paled. The Eraser sqaud was the elite team of assasins the Council used to take out the most dangerous threats.
The Director ushered Lucas and Jacob to a secret passage he had revealed with a simple button push.
"GO! Take the passage outside and run. Head to the Isle of Steel, there you'll learn everything about this facility, the Council, even yourselves. Take this." The Director handed Jacob a journal and shoved them into the passage. "You have gifts, use them and make things right."
Lucas and Jacob ran for what seemed like an hour when they finally emerged just outside the city limits. They looked back and were horrified at the sight they saw.
"No.." Jacob whispered terrified. The Compound was a blazing wreck. The flames were so high they were clearly visible.
Lucas just stared silently. But his anger was just as visible as the flames. His fangs were bared and his paws were tightly clenched.
"What can we do Lucas?" Jacob asked quietly, clutching the Director's journal. He was scared, more than ever before. Lucas started walking away from the city.
"We have to find the Isle of Steel." Lucas answered just as quietly. Jacob nodded and followed Lucas into the night.
=Thousands Of Miles Away, Council Room=
"Council, I report that the Hybrids in Director Slate's Compound have been eradicated." A masked figured stated in a flat voice.
"All of them? None are allowed to live." A Council member asked sternly.
The masked figure paused. "We have reason to believe that two escaped. We also believe that the Hybrids in question are more dagerous, due to reports we found talking about "New genetic designs" and "A revolutionary future in store." He said looking down.
The Council spoke as one. "KILL THEM! FIND THEM! DO NOT LET THEM ESCAPE!" The masked figure nodded and left quickly.
