This is the third blog in a series on the foundation of the US government, as established in the Constitution.
Office Holders The President leads the Executive Branch. Both the President and Vice President serve 4-year terms, elected on years that are multiples of 4. To be President, that individual must be a natural born citizen (or be a citizen at the signing of the Constitution), at least 35 years old, and have lived within the country 14 or more years. when taking office, the President-Elect must take the following oath:
The Vice President succeeds the President either temporarily or permanently, should the President be unable to carry out the duties of office.
Presidential Oath "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
Duties of Office - Commander-in-Chief of the military and any state militias that come under Federal jurisdiction.
- May require opinions of other Federal government principal officers
- Powers to pardon (except oneself)
- Make treaties, after 2/3 Senate confirmation
- With consent of the Senate, may appoint Judges, Ambassadors, Consuls, or other officers not outlines in the Constitution or make temporary "recess" appointments when Congress is not in session
- Must report the State of the Union to Congress
- May convene one or both Houses of Congress
- Receives ambassadors as guests
- See that laws are faithfully executed
- Commissions all offices of the Federal government
Impeachment "The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other High crimes and Misdemeanors." Details of this process are addressed under Article I.
