It was a hot, tranquil day in the Loyola college of New Orleans city. The temperature was 35 degrees Celsius and there was a slight breeze that was just enough to cool everyone.
It was only one month before the NFL season started and Michael Slater was looking forward to it. He was the quarterback of the Loyola college football team; The Underdogs. The Underdogs played 20 games against other teams in Louisiana. So far they hadn’t lost a single game.
Their next match would be the most significant so far in their career. They were taking on The Saints. There was only five days before this match and The Underdogs were ready.
Their roster consisted of three quarterbacks, two kickers, five running backs (one fullback), eleven defensive linemen and seven offensive linebackers. Michael who was nicknamed “The Hound” was the main quarterback. He knew all the plays by heart and was the reason why they won every match.
Their best wide receiver; Aaron Smith was nicknamed “The Cheetah” because he was the fastest runner in the college. He won all of their trophies from marathons to 100m events. He never dropped the ball. Everyone who knew about this team had doubts that they were going to win. After all they only played the other college teams. They were talking about The Saints here. The Underdogs weren’t even in the minor league.
However there were a few people who had hope, the local bar to the Loyola College managed to get live feed of them playing. A radio station offered live commentary of the game. Inside the commentator’s stand stood the mayor of New Orleans.
He would be publicly broadcasting the game via radio.
“This is Ray Nagin here describing the most watched American Football game throughout Louisiana. The Underdogs take on The Saints in a battle of determination versus skill. Kick off starts in five minutes so grab something to drink or eat now. It looks like the players from both teams are ready. The referee flips the coin and The Saints have won the toss. The Saints decide to receive and The Underdogs choose to defend left. Bush catches the ball and burns down the sidelines to the forty yard line. The Underdogs look like they have bitten of more than they could chew here. They go with a draw play and touchdown Saints! The PAT attempt is good! The score is seven, nothing. The Underdogs have a touchback and will start from the twenty yard line. Slater releases the ball and we have an interception. Would you believe it? Another touchdown! It’s the end of the first quarter. Wow these guys are taking a thrashing in this game. Hopefully The Underdogs will make a comeback soon.
Smith receives the ball and he sprints to the thirty yard line. They run a play action and would you look at that! A huge sack for ten yards! The Underdogs are put at an extreme disadvantage here. Hang on, their running back is though! Thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety, touchdown underdogs! This is incredible! The score is now fourteen seven. Bush catches the ball but then he drops it and it’s a fumble at the twenty yard line! Slater picks up the ball and dashes for another touchdown! The score is now dead even. The whistle blows for halftime. This game could go either way there is no way of predicting the outcome.
Not much is happening in this quarter; both teams are struggling to strike that blow that’ll put them in the lead. Unfortunately nothing much is happening as the game is taking place in the middle of the pitch. There are fumbles, interceptions but nothing else. Finally the quarter is over. It was rather boring I would say. Now we have the last quarter. I’m hoping something happens here.”
Michael stood sweating as he made his way towards the pitch. They were on the 42 yard line in the Saints half. It was third down and three yards from the conversion line. The quarterback decided to throw but unfortunately they got a huge sack of fifteen yards.
Despite them being fourth and eighteen Slater decided to go for it. Amazingly enough, the ball that was thrown deep found it’s man and he made it to the twenty yard line. They decided to go for a field goal but it missed and the ball was handed over.
The saints looked like they had a promising start but then their drive was stopped at the sixty yard line.
There was ten seconds left on the clock. It was all or nothing.
Slater threw the ball with all of his energy at Smith and he caught it in the end zone. The ball was out of bounds but with one second left on the clock they challenged the play.
The referee spoke “The ruling on the field will be reviewed.” After what seemed like an eternity the results were back.
“After reviewing the play, the ruling on the field is overturned.”
The score was 20-14 to The Underdogs. The PAT was good. They punted it into The Saints end zone and they consequently won the game.
