In celebration of the realease of FF XIII(well, not really, but whatever) I'm going to review one of the FF series' most overlooked games: FF Mystic Quest for the Super NES.
FF MQ is the perfect combination of RPG and Adventure. Not only do you use weapons in battle, but on the field, too! Use the axes to cut trees to clear a path, bombs to blow holes in walls, claws to climb up cliffs, and SO much more.
Gameplay: 9/10
The gameplay is AWESOME. Aside from the fact that battles aren't random, they occur when you walk into them on the field, it's just great.
Sound: 10/10
Man oh man... FF has had some AWESOME soundtracks, but this is just insane, especially for the SNES. From the title sequence to boss battles, there is excellent music that matches the mood perfectly.
Graphics: 9/10
Great use of sprites. Enemies have a second sprite when they are almost dead, and bosses have multiple. The main character has sprites from shrugging to flexing his muscles. Just great.
Grinding: 7/10
I know this isn't a usual category, but I just want to point something out. It takes quite a while to level up, especially since the battles are really slow. And your gonna need it, because you get about 2 levels between bosses, with exactly 40 HP per level, and damage recieved from boss' attacks jumps from 40 to 120, which is some heavy damage. So don't be surprised if you see yourself grinding if you play this game.
Overall: 9/10
You just have to love this game. If you ever get the chance to buy it and you have a working SNES, GET IT. Just get it.
I thought FF:MQ was a fun side story to the FF series, but I never thought it was phenomenal. It did have some good music for the time, and some of the levels were fun. Most of the game seemed like standard fare for that time period when I bought it. Still, I was entertained for a few weeks with it.
