Hello everyone! With the age of the DS coming to a close, and the 3DS taking its place, I thought I'd look back on some of the most impressive games released for the DS over the years.
I thought I'd give the honor of the first blog to one of the greatest games of all time, The World Ends With You.
The World Ends With You is simply one of the most amazing accomplishments in gaming history. The fantastic and stylized sprite graphics, the high quality cut scenes and voice acting, insanely difficult two screen control gameplay, and possibly one of the most captivating stories in all of video gaming history all make this game one of the greats.
Sadly, this game simply did not receive much notice by most people, and today, is still one of the harder games for the DS to get ahold of.
I myself was lucky enough to buy the game for $12 used at a Blockbuster by my house. Forget any other DS game I owned, this one had me hooked from day one.
While some may complain about the graphics being sprites in an anime background, I find the style to be sort of modern, and displays the characters as of they were out of place, which, they are. The sprite animation quality is good, and character movements are flowing.
The cutscenes the game has are usually short, but are very well done, and usually reveal a key plot moment. One of the more sad cutscenes may actually stir up emotions...yes, the game is that good at attaching you to the characters. The voice acting is also very good, and makes the characters' personalities more distinct.
The gameplay of the game is one of the most challenging systems to master. Each battle utilizes both the upper and lower screen. On the upper screen, you control a helper character using either the D Pad or the ABXY buttons.
On the lower screen, you control the main character, Neku, using the touch screen/stylus. You tap, slice, and shift to attack, depending on the weapon you are yielding.
Fear not however, for if you can't control two characters simulatiously, the game gives you the ability to turn the character into a CPU after a few seconds of immuring the character. CPUs are not as good as you are, and be cautious, as both characters have a joint health bar.
When you aren't battling, you walk around using either the D Pad, or your stylus.
The customization of the game is also quite amazing. There are hundreds of different weapons, or "pins", that enable you to fight off creatures called Noise. There are also hundreds of different clothing options and different foods you can equip to activate abilities during battle, or while walking around.
Bosses in the game can be quite challenging, using both screens to their fullest potential. These bosses often have attacks reaching both screens, and require quite a bit of strategy to defeat.
In all, the are 22 different "days", or levels to the game, each taking any where from 30-90 minutes to complete. Each day also has additional challenges that can be finished at a later time.
Probably the most redeeming part of the game however, is the story. It tells the tale of a group of people, who have died. They are forced into a game, in which they must complete challenges in order to return to the real world.
You play as Neku, a teen who has pushed the world away, and always drowns out people by wearing a huge pair of earphones.
Throughout the story there are many plot twists which are completely unexpected, and characters which you will become very attached to. There are many sad scenes in the game, and many betrayals.
Overall, this game is one of the best stand alone titles released on the DS. Square Enix really pushed the limit with this game. And made it all it could be, and more.
This is the only game I will rate 10/10. It may now be perfect, but it comes so close, that it deserves a perfect score.
Go buy this game now. You won't regret it. Chances are it'll become one of your favorite DS titles.
I Freakin' Give this 10 out of 10!! I like The Amazing Music In this game(Soundtrack is Awsome) I Have got All The Stars On the Mission-thing list and.......The Cut scene is sad.... Other Then That: BUY IT! You will love it!!
Meh, it wasn't THAT great. It was basically an emo version of Kingdom Hearts in a similar way. I'd give the game an 8.25, because it was just too easy for me to beat.
