Hello everyone! Since I always hear these common misconceptions about roller coasters, I thought I'd debunk them:
#1: Roller Coasters Can Fly Off The Track!
No they can't.
Ever since the early 1930's, roller coasters have been equiped with an innovative device known as upstop wheels (or pads). These wheels prevent roller coasters from leaving the track. They rest under the track to keep the train firmly planted.
There are a few exceptions however, as the "scenic railway" coasters of the early 1900's use a brakeman in the midle of the train to keep the train on the track.
There are few of these left.
#2: Speed Exaggeration
I hear this one a lot:
Hey this coaster XYZ goes like 300 mph!
Roller coasters travel, on average, around 40-50 mph. Launched coasters are often faster, around 60-80 mph.
The fastest roller coaster currently operating is Formula Rossa at Ferrari World is Abu Dhabi.
It travels at a top speed of 150 mph.
It uses a set of hydraulic cables to launch you to your top speed.
#3: Safey Of Roller Coasters
Roller coasters are extremely safe. You're more likely to be injured in a car accident or falling of furniture than being hurt on a coaster.
Coaster's restrain systems are either shoulder bars, where restrains are pulled down from above, and rest on your shoulders, or lap bars, which rest in front of you, and are pulled forward, or pulled from the sides.
In the unlikely event that these restraints fail, there are extra precautions, such as seat belts, or heavier restaints to keep you in your seat.
Roller Coaster accidents are very rare, and when they do happen, more often than not, they are due to rider error, not mechanical error.
Those are the three most common misconceptions about roller coasters!
These multi million dollar mahines are designed to maximize your safety, so sit back, relax, and enjoy your ride!
If you want a real rollercoaster go to Six Flags Arlington,TX and ride the Texas Giant(the new one! holds the record for steepest drop, completely vertcal), the Titan(holds some records for height and G forces), Runaway Mountain(supposedly haunted), the Batman, Mr. Freeze or the Flashback. I've ridden all of them in one day THANK GOD FOR FLASH PASS!!!!!
my lilest sister doesnt like rollercosters cuz she moves around too much in the cart. i sat behind her on the Twister in Knobles and (to be honest) it was funny to watch.
I've only been on three rollercoasters my whole life. They were all fun, but I was really scared. And, I still am. This'll probably change my view a bit. Rated +1. :D
The last major roller coaster accident due to the ride itself was severa years back, 07' I believe.
It was on a coaster called Fujin Raijjin II. While in it's course, one of the ride's axel's broke due to age (hadn't been replaced it 15 years.). The ride partially derailed, and a woman was knocked into a catwalk, killing her.
The park has since been closed and the coaster scrapped.
I went to an amusement park and rode this certain ride so many times I got sick Dx ever since then I get nervous to go on rides :/ Which sucks because I loved them before, although I have "womanned up" and went on some rides since then.. there was this log flume ride my sister made me go on.. and it was so much fun I went like 4 more times xD It was kinda creepy at first though because you had to get on them while they were moving.. and there were no seatbelts or anything, you just sat on the bench and put your feet in these grooves on the sides of the floor and held onto the side bars if you wanted to. It was a lot of fun though and went almost straight down really fast.. it was amazing.. hopefully I can get the courage to ride all sorts of rides again xP I used to love roller coasters, but even the last time I went on the small indoor one near here (which I used to ride all the time, and be fine), I felt sick >.>
Anyway, sorry for the long comment xD your blog is true.
