Here we are with 5 more examples of just how very different our world is today in the medical field then it was 34 years ago in 1977.
1977
•Hay Fever was treated by injections or moving to a pollen-free area. Those were the only known teatments.
•Hodgkin's Disease was still being studied & little was known about it. In 1977, it was 'thought' to be a cancer.
•Leukemia was considered a blood 'disorder' & was always fatal. Treatment was aimed at making the patient comfortable until they passed on.
•Mental Deficiency was grouped as: severely retarded (idiots: 0-19 IQ), moderately retarded (imbociles: 20-49 IQ), & mildly retarded (morons: 50-69 IQ). DRs quite literally used the terms idiots, imbociles, & morons when referring to the severity.
•Paranoia was considered a separate mental disorder & patients diagnosed with Paranoia were always hospitalized permanantly.
2011
•Hay Fever now has many ways to be treated including: pills, injections, & if the patient chooses, moving to a pollen-free area.
•Hodgkin's Disease is now known to be a type of cancer in the lymph nodes, thus scientists have renamed it Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
•Leukemia is now known to be a cancer of the blood cells & is very treatable. In many cases, patients make a complete recovery.
•Mental Deficiency While severity classifications are still similar, DRs no longer use offensive words such as idiot, imbocile, & moron when describing how severe a case is.
•Paranoia is now known to be a sign of another illness, sometimes mental & sometimes physical. Patients suffering from paranoia are tested & examined, in which case the cause when determined, is treated. In most cases the patient goes on to lead a normal, healthy life, sometimes, they might need medication. But they are no longer hospitalized upon diagnosis of 'Paranoid'.
