“I feel like you’re my mom!” He whined loudly. Hannah felt her eye twitch in exasperation as her classmate, being himself, continued to point out that she was indeed a ‘party pooper’. Now, Hannah was a patient person; she could handle several small children at a time without raising her voice. But Hannah needed beauty sleep to keep up her positive attitude. Even a minor case of sleep loss could result in a terrible mood. Her roommates learned this quickly, and avoided her by all means until 8:30, two hours after she routinely awakens.
These rules didn’t seem to apply to Yong Soo. He pranced around, expecting everything to go his way. He didn’t like being told what to do; he especially didn’t like to be corrected. Yong Soo was always right, regardless of the falseness of his statement. He also knew exactly what got under Hannah’s skin, and used this knowledge to his advantage.
“Your mom obviously knew what she was talking about then!” She snapped back. It was lunch hour; All Hannah wanted to do was eat and return to her novel.
“You don’t know my mom!” He snapped. Hannah glared at him with enough venom to kill. She put a lone finger to her mouth; the universal symbol for ‘shut up already!’ Yong Soo sulked in defeat. He was feeling jittery and needed someone to bug. The brunette rocked back and forth in his assigned seat, making a shrill squeaking sound. He thought out loud:
“This seat really needs to be fixed!” Hannah screamed in frustration, causing Yong Soo to give her an offended look. “Well someone didn’t take their chill pill this morning!”
Hannah didn’t say anything for a while. Perhaps she was counting down from ten, or restraining herself from smacking the poor boy.
“… Answer me!” He protested. Irritated by the lack of response, he looked for something to get Hannah’s attention with. Almost immediately, he spotted Hannah’s almonds.
Thud!
“Ow! What in the world…,”
Smack! The almond hit her forehead quite hard.
Bam! It hit her between the eyes, forcing them closed. She quickly anticipated the next attack and buried her face in her arms, face down on the table.
“Hannah!” Yong Soo cried, now pulling her hair.
“Yong Soo!” She furiously smacked his hand away.
“Hannah!” He put his hand to his mouth, and as if he were in deep pain. Hannah stared in disbelief as tears began to pool in his dark orbs. What a baby! Yong Soo was now starting to draw attention, causing Hannah to panic.
“S-Soo-Soo, don’t cry!” She told him in a hushed attempt to quiet him. Her caretaker was now looking their way. If Ms. Catharina sees him crying, I’ll get in trouble for sure. Come on, Yong Soo! Man up! Hannah was reduced to quietly hoping to herself that said caretaker didn’t come to investigate.
“B-But Hannah-nunna,” He took a shaky breath of air, “Th-That huuurrt.” The first tear streamed slowly down his cheek. Hannah wiped it off hurriedly.
“Well almonds aren’t used for that!” She snapped.
“Wh-What are you t-talking about?” Yong Soo asked innocently. His puppy dog eyes were making it hard for Hannah to stay mad at the younger one.
“It isn’t nice to throw almonds at people.” She explained patiently, hoping that her newly found attitude would help her situation, even if a little. Her sleepiness seemed to melt away with her fear of detention. Yong Soo was too childish for his age, and it bugged her and he knew it. He could get her in trouble anytime he wanted, and she was also aware of this. That’s why she put up with it. It, being the constant bugging, nagging, pestering, and whining that came with the perky spirit of Yong Soo.
It’s a shame that she’d never know how much he looked up to her.
