History
Early History
Chris Redfield served in the United States Air Force, where he was part of the same unit as Barry Burton. His service record is filled with commendations and disciplinary actions alike. From his service, he has a license and experience to pilot helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, including experience with the V/TOL Harrier jet. He also received rigorous training in close quarters combat (CQC), including hand-to-hand and knife combat. He also has on-hand battle experience with many varieties and types of weaponry from handguns to flamethrowers. By commanding officers, he is described as "uncompromising", "possessing unwavering dedication" and having a "high level of adaptability". These traits and his unshakeable demeanour and straight-laced personality in any situation allowed Chris to earn his wings, but also brought him into direct conflict with his superiors on many occasions. In 1995, unable to settle the differences between himself and his superiors, he was expelled on good terms. Following his dismissal and retirement, Chris became a drifter. In 1996, he was recruited into the recently formed Special Forces team in Raccoon City-- S.T.A.R.S. for his military prowess.
S.T.A.R.S. ~ 1996 - 1998
Chris quickly proved himself in the unit, becoming the team's number one marksman. His skills, keen observation and insight caught the eye of S.T.A.R.S. captain, Albert Wesker. He was assigned as Point Man (PM). Due to his previous experience as a pilot in the U.S.A.F. and possession of a license to pilot helicopters, Chris was qualified to pilot the S.T.A.R.S Alpha team if the need arose. During his days in the S.T.A.R.S Alpha team, he regularly competed in marksmanship competitions with them both in which he won many first place awards. During this time, he also regularly trained his younger sister, Claire Redfield, in the same skills as a means of self-defence. As gifts, Chris gave Claire his lighter and S.T.A.R.S. knife, opting to use his own favourite large combat knife. During his time in S.T.A.R.S., Chris was responsible for solving several cases.
Mansion Incident ~ Jul. 24, 1998
During the spring of 1998, several bizarre murder cases began to arise from the Arklay Mountain region. As the concern of the public kept rising, the Raccoon City Police Department had no choice but to dispatch the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team to investigate on July 23rd. On the evening of July 24, after a full day with no contact from the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team, the Alpha team was deployed. Shortly after landing, the team discovered the wreckage of Bravo team's helicopter and the corpse of pilot Kevin Dooley. The team was soon ambushed by savage creatures known as Cerberus, and they fled into the nearby mansion: the Arklay Research Facility. From here, Chris and Jill conducted separate investigations in the facility.
Soon, the two joined together along with Barry and Rebecca to unravel the secrets behind the facility; the t-virus, the Umbrella Corporation, Bio-Organic Weapons and the ultimate mystery; S.T.A.R.S. was actually betrayed by their own captain, Albert Wesker. He had truly been a double agent working for the pharmaceutical corporation, Umbrella, and was acquiring the combat data of the company's B.O.W.s in order to dissolve into the ranks of an opposing company known only as "The Organization". He was using Chris and Jill as test subjects to battle the monsters and gain the combat data of these B.O.W.s and appease the Organization superiors. The final experiment that needed to be tested for data was the Tyrant (T-002 Type). After being activated, the creature seemingly killed Wesker and confronted Chris and Jill. Despite their formidable training, the pair were unable to kill it.
On the roof of the mansion, Chris and Jill were seemingly outmatched by the Tyrant as it continued to charge them. Brad Vickers flew in over-head via helicopter, having located a flair set off by his teammates. He tossed Chris a rocket launcher, which Chris used to destroy the creature. Chris, Jill, Barry, and Rebecca, the last survivors of the event, got in the helicopter and flew to safety.
Umbrella Investigation ~ Aug. 1998
Following the Mansion Incident, Chris attempted to use the case to launch a full-scale investigation against Umbrella. However, his efforts were for naught due to the lack of evidence which had all been erased with the mansion's destruction, and the fact that Umbrella had the R.P.D., specifically Brian Irons, under their influence. Frustrated, Chris resigned from S.T.A.R.S. and continued the investigation on his own, enlisting the aid of his surviving teammates, Jill Valentine and Barry Burton 8. Chris attempted to investigate the Umbrella Chemical Plant in the city, as well as other key Umbrella facilities. Though the course of his investigations, Chris managed to discover the presence of Umbrella's underground facility beneath Raccoon City, as well as cryptic evidence alluding to the existence of the G-virus. Realising that the nightmare that he and the remaining S.T.A.R.S. members thought they left behind wasn't over, he came into contact with the Federal Police Department and presented his findings to them. However, the response would come far too late 9. Rather than pursue the subject further however in Raccoon City, Chris instead left for Europe to conduct his own investigation on Umbrella by intending to "pay a visit" to Umbrella Headquarters in Europe, leaving Jill Valentine, who decided to stay behind in Raccoon City to try and learn more about the laboratory present in the city before joining Chris herself.
Chris cut off all contact with his younger sister Claire in an attempt to protect her from Umbrella, feeling that his investigation would put her at risk, and telling her would make her want to join in the investigation. However, on September 29, his plan backfired as Claire made her way into Raccoon City by herself to look for him.
Rockfort Island & Antarctic Base ~ Dec. 27, 1998
Chris' exact actions in Europe were unknown, and his status was supposedly in hiding 10. However, he was soon contacted by Leon S. Kennedy concerning the whereabouts of and situation that his sister Claire Redfield had found herself in on Rockfort Island 11. Chris requested that Leon arrange a rescue mission, and then departed immediately by himself, arriving too late as Claire had since left the island by plane. While attempting to get off the island to catch up to her, Chris came across a man he thought had been killed only a few months prior: his treacherous former captain, Albert Wesker. Wesker had in fact planned his death at the hands of the Tyrant, so that an experimental injection could revive him with superhuman powers. However, Chris and Jill had destroyed the Tyrant before escaping, preventing it from being acquired by Wesker's new employer and severely damaging his reputation. This gave Wesker an intense hatred of Chris and Jill, desiring revenge for matters of pride.
With their meeting, which almost resulted in Chris' death, he learnt that Claire had arrived in the Umbrella Antarctic Base, and that Wesker was after the t-Veronica Virus, created by Alexia Ashford. Wasting no time, Chris came across a second V/TOL Harrier and quickly flew off in search of his sister. After reuniting with her, Chris managed to defeat Alexia's mutated form. He then pursued Claire again as she was held hostage by Wesker. Wesker remained undaunted, revealing that he had the corpse of Steve Burnside to use as a source for a t-Alexia sample. With his new superhuman abilities, Wesker again almost succeeded in killing Chris.
As Wesker came down for the killing blow, Chris jumped out of the way and pulled a lever, releasing several steal girders above Wesker. The thousands of pounds of steel did not keep Wesker down for long, but an explosion ripped through the nearby wall. The lab's self-destruct had been activated, and the resulting blast scarred Wesker and blocked him from approaching Chris again. Interrupted, Wesker vowed that next time Chris would not be so lucky. Chris then left the base with his sister, barely making it to the jet as the base continued to self-destruct. While Claire tried to make Chris promise not to leave her again, he said he couldn't, as Umbrella needed to be destroyed once and for all.
Umbrella's End ~ 1999 - 2003
Between 1999 and 2003, as Umbrella's court trial was being dragged out, Chris rejoined with his long time partner, Jill Valentine and the two formed an anti-Umbrella group, a private unit specializing in anti-bioterrorism and anti-biohazard activities and hunting down the remnants of Umbrella. One such incident took place in a Russian village in the Caucasus region 12. Here, the pair found a young girl, Anna, and managed to unearth some of Umbrella's new plot of revival before encountering Albert Wesker once again, though this time he was uninterested in the two. After being caught up in an explosion that seperated Chris and Jill from Wesker, the two left as local authorities arrived to clean up the village. However, a clue regarding Anna's father lead them to the very thing they had been searching for: Umbrella's final haven, the Caucasus Research Facility. Wasting no time, Chris and Jill gathered a unit together and borrowed two Russian gunships, ignoring authorization from the Russian government.
On February 18, 2003, the unit lead a full-scale assault on Umbrella's Russian facility. Fighting their way through, the two reached the very depths of the facility and came face-to-face with Umbrella's ultimate biological weapon, T-A.L.O.S. The monstrosity had been prepared by Sergei Vladimir, who Chris regarded as "another Umbrella psycho". He planned to sustain the company, having been made its new leader by Ozwell E. Spencer before he vanished. After a long and difficult battle, the former members of ST.A.R.S. successfully eliminated T-A.L.O.S. However, it was only with the behind-the-scenes assistance of Albert Wesker, who had also infiltrated the facility, that Umbrella itself was destroyed. Wesker killed Sergei and took all of Umbrella's data onto a single disc, using his findings to topple Umbrella. Outside the defunct base, as their team left, Chris and Jill reminisced that Wesker was still out there somewhere.
Fight Against Bioterrorism ~ 2003 - 2006
Following Umbrella's downfall, Chris, along with Jill, helped to establish the B.S.A.A. With their old anti-Umbrella group as one of the foundations, it was picked up by the Global Pharmaceutical Consortium and reformed. As two of the "Original Eleven", they became Special Operations Agents (S.O.A.) after a new age of bio-terrorism descended upon the world, with Umbrella's viral legacy at the very center. He took part in the prevention of bio-terrorism on a global scale, in operations to destroy illegal production plants and in arresting black marketeers all over the world including Asia, South America and Europe. The number of operations he actively participated in proudly elevated him to the top among all unit members. Due to his position in the B.S.A.A., he was given level 10 action authority, allowing him to participate in investigations and operations of other branches. 13. During this time, Chris and Jill also continued their manhunt for Albert Wesker. It is unknown whether this was one of the B.S.A.A.'s assignments or a personal agenda. Chris also continued to make himself stronger in pursuit of his goals, gaining around 20kg of body mass and muscle in preparation for his fated confrontation with Wesker.
On August 1, 2006, Chris and Jill received a reliable tip on the whereabouts of the founder of Umbrella, Ozwell E. Spencer. Hoping that an interrogation of the decreipt old man would yield Wesker's location, Chris and Jill infiltrated the Spencer Estate in Europe. However, instead of finding Spencer, they found a blood stained Wesker standing over the lifeless body of Umbrella's founder. Without hesitation, Chris immediately identified the figure and opened fire. However, with his superior speed, strength and agility, Wesker easily outmatched the duo. Wesker then threw Chris to the ground in front of the castle's cliffside window and prepared to deliver the final blow. Instead, Jill flung herself towards the two and tackled Wesker out the window, plunging down the cliff. Chris launched a search for Jill's body and personal effects, of which none were ever found. Albert Wesker and Jill Valentine were presumed dead by the B.S.A.A. on November 23.
Kijuju Investigation ~ March 2009
Throughout the three years after the loss of his partner, Chris began to question the very things he was fighting for. Despite this, the call of his duties remained and he continued his private war on bioweapons with even greater intensity. In 2009, a B.S.A.A. investigation commenced on the Kijuju Autonomous Zone. Thanks to fellow agent Reynard Fisher, the B.S.A.A. learnt of the likely involvement of Ricardo Irving, a known bioweapons dealer. Chris himself had also been led to Kijuju through one of his own investigations. Using the authority vested in his rank within the organization, Chris insisted on being a part of the investigation, a matter normally attributed solely to the West African branch of the B.S.A.A. With ease, Chris was allowed to participate in the investigation and his partner was swiftly decided as Sheva Alomar, an agent of the West African branch. The mission plans were quickly laid out. Alpha team, led by Dan Dechant, was to infiltrate the site of a bioweapons deal between Ricardo Irving and an unknown American group. Meanwhile, Chris and Sheva were to provide backup as the Bravo team. The Delta team led by Josh Stone were also put on standby in case of emergency and were prepared to invade through the Kijuju sea port. The operation was put underway as the deal commenced.
Alpha team infiltrated through the storage facility and underground passages beneath the building the deal was taking place in, while Chris and Sheva made their way through the public assembly. They met with Reynard Fisher, who supplied them with their weapons and equipment and gave them a basic overview of the objective. After Fisher's departure, Chris and Sheva made their way through the streets of Kijuju until the sound of screams emanated from a nearby building. Quickly moving to investigate, the two found a young man being held in place by two others with an organism being forced into his mouth. As the young man began to convulse, the others swiftly fled. Chris was faced with a new horror, one more violent than any Zombie he had ever encountered. Chris noted to HQ that they were acting like the Ganado mentioned in Leon S. Kennedy's report of the South Europe incident in 2004. He also saw an image of what appeared to be his dead partner Jill in a stream of mission data. This gave Chris hope that she was alive. Soon, both Alpha and Delta teams were slaughtered, and Chris and Sheva fought the B.O.W.s responsible for whiping their teamates out before making their way through an abandoned underground cave system to discover the original genesis of all their grief and sorrow; the Umbrella Africa Research Facility and the new Uroboros Research Facility behind it. Discovering that Albert Wesker was still alive after all, Chris was also confronted by a controlled Jill-- her will restricted and controlled by a device on her chest. After removing the device, Chris and Sheva left Jill to chase down Wesker to a large cargo ship.
