Screams and gunfire. The sounds ringed through my ears, waking me. Obviously a gang. Amelia City is a gang hotspot. The citizens rely on us, the Civil Protection, to keep them safe. We can’t always fulfill our duties, however.
I strapped on a gas mask and Kevlar and headed out with two C.P. officers. We crept out of the department and saw the body of a young woman. Fleeing from the scene was a member of Elite Squad, Amelia’s latest and greatest problem. He was out of our gun range. Nick Cham cursed. “We’ll get the next one, Cham,” I said through gritted teeth. We shuffled back to the department, which is also the mayor’s office. Amelia is a small city, so C.P. has direct ties to Mayor Pira, who was waiting for us at the door.
“Elite?” He asked.
Officer Hob nodded. “And he go away, too,” Cham said as he ripped off his gas mask in rage. He was no older than 25, with brown hair. He was also the chief of Civil Protection.
“Well then,” Pira said, “Off with you.” We went back to the top floor with the six other Civil Protection working the night shift. Just as I was about to lay down, Nick came up to me.
“Mayor’s office, first thing.”

I woke up with my Kevlar and gas mask still on and reported immediately to the mayor’s office. Chief Cham and Officer Hob were waiting for me. Cham motioned for me to close the door behind me.
“Elite Squad has been going on for far too long,” Cham said. “Hob, you plant cameras. We’ll meet back here in two days. Dismissed.”
“Hey, Hobbit,” I said, “I’ll go with you.” Hob nodded and hurried down the stairs. I followed, and we both took out our SMGs and headed to Elite HQ. There was a sign out saying, “If you see a cop, shoot him.” Fear shot through me like buckshot. After a silent count to three, Hob kicked the door open and I planted a camera inside. The smell of alcohol and gunpowder flooded out. Three Elite followed it. “Hob! The Subway!” I yelled. I owned a small part of the subway, which had a direct route to the sewage system.
As the Elite opened fire, we hurried in and opened my door, locking it behind us. “Come on,” I whispered, and headed down some stairs to another door. Just as we got inside, the first door fell. Locking the door behind me, I set up a maze of motion-activated bombs. Bang. Bang. The door was coming down quick. I motioned for Hob to come to the sewage line.
After locking the door, we hurried to put in earplugs. The door in the main room fell. Explosions. “Come on,” I heard faintly. I looked under the door and saw five people. More must have followed the first three. I got up just before there was another explosion. This one triggered the other bombs. I ducked back down. One man, somehow, survived. I took my earplugs out. Hob did the same.
“I’ll get the door, you cuff him,” I said, slowly unlocking the door. There was a loud noise as the door was kicked open. “Gun down!” I yelled. The man fired a shot out of fear. Hob took this time to swipe the sawed-off sniper and put handcuffs on the man. We rushed out of the Subway and back to the department, which triples as the jail. We threw the young man in a cell and went upstairs. Using security cameras, we could watch the man from our floor. He was feeling around his cell.
“He’s probably blind,” Cham said, walking up behind us.
“Or drunk,” I replied. “You two go on, I’m gonna watch a while longer. I watched for about five more minutes. As I was about to leave, the man kicked down a panel, revealing a tunnel. He was definitely sober, and began to crawl through, carefully replacing the tiles.
I rushed downstairs and into the cell. Hands sweating and adrenaline pumping, I unlocked the man’s cell and began quietly kicked down the panel and began to crawl after the man. With my SMG out and flashlight on, I could be seen from a mile away.
The man had picked up a weapon in the hall. As soon as he could see me, a shot fired. He missed, but I pretended it hit. The man removed a panel as I crept down tunnel. The overwhelming sounds of gunfire and drunken cheers filled the tunnel. “Downy! He made it! Go, Mr. Downy!”
Downy hopped down, not bothering to replace the panel. I crawled faster and took a look out. About sixty or more Elite were there, and that’s probably only one-third of them.
Something had changed. I looked up to find the crowd silent and all guns were pointed
