Have you ever wondered how Nintendo came up with the part numbers associated with consoles, games, and peripherals? Who hasn't!

Anyways, they have an interesting history behind the prefixes to each platform, which I will explain here for your enlightenment. It's easy to tell from the early platforms that they simply abbreviated the titles into part number prefixes, but as the industry became highly competitive, secretive project names became the norm until the final console names were revealed soon before launch, at various tradeshows. (I have excluded any meanings that are not confirmed.)
