Last Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden and challenger Congressman Paul Ryan sparred in a debate in Kentucky. This was the only vice presidential debate of election season.

Historically, VP debates have done very little to sway undecided voters, since the presidential candidates are the ones at the top of the tickets. This one may have fired up the respective bases, but it did little more in the end.

Now, if you were listening on the radio, your conclusion of who "won" would be much different than if you saw it on television. Why is this? The candidates were fairly on-par with their political rhetoric. They repeated talking points that the campaigns have been speaking for months. There weren't any major gaffes to hurt either candidate, and there weren't any clever lines that got the audience roaring, either.

So, why was it much different for television viewers? Biden tried to make up for the near unanimously perceived loss of President Obama (his running mate) in the first debate, which has led to a huge swing of undecided voters to the opponents. He did this by trying to be aggressive, and it came off looking disrespectful. On the split-screen, viewers could see constant gestures that mocked Ryan and belittled him. What got so bizarre was Biden's silent laughs at important moments, like the discussion of Iran producing nuclear weapons. After the debate, the moderator, Martha Radditz, even said that Biden was "too big for the small table" around which the three of them sat.

So, how did Biden's body language play with viewers? Democrats thought Biden's aggression was needed to call out Ryan on perceived lies, so they applauded the performance. Republicans saw Biden's disrespect only compounding the perceived lies he told and felt that Ryan was the clear winner. Undecided voters got little from it, but some polls show that a small number of voters - particularly women - may have seen Biden in a negative light. The on-going election polls show no real change, but Saturday Nights Live had fun, nonetheless.
