The Metroid prime series was the most terrifying game I played on the gamecube at a young age.
Besides resident evil 4, metroid always had me jumping when enemies charged and lunged at you at blinding speeds.
The most terrifying ones was those no armed, two legged, large mouthed creatures in Phendrana Drifts from Metroid Prime and their greatly evolved cousins in Torvus Bog on Metroid Prime 2: echoes. The ones in echoes made me rage quit for the first time when I realized they could jump up to higher levels to reach you if you tried escaping there ground level and could swim faster than you could if you didn't get the upgrade to move quickly when submerged.
Fighting the larger boss forms of them in both games was traumatizing. Especially the second ones grapple beam gaurian. How he creeped so slowly towards you like a T-rex, took greats amount of punishment before flinching, and went beserk whenever you took your aim off him or put to much distance between you and it. Just straight up traumatizing.
I did not touch the game after that until three months after that event. It was like Jaws and Jurassic park in one creature. Both of my highly feared creatures at that age. Traumatizing, and nothing more.
