Hey, I had to write a persuasive essay on Stem Cell research for Bio. I purposely did not include anything religious in order to avoid offending anyone. Stem cell research is a controversial issue in America right now. Stem cells are non-specialized cells that can turn into many types of specialized cells, like muscle cells or skin cells. Humans start out as a clump of stem cells, and then the cells start creating specific jobs for themselves, working together to create a body. Doctors take stem cells from the umbilical cord when a baby is born if the parent wants to have a “backup plan” when the child gets a serious injury. Scientists plan on using the stem cells and “programming” them to do specific functions and turn into different cells. Many people are against stem cell research because it is not fully researched and can harm the human race instead of help it. It can also lead to the creation of clones and artificial species which can harm the environment and lead to severe consequences. Stem cells do potentially have many uses, though. The non-specialized cells can cure many diseases, like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Diabetes. There is a chance they can even play a role in cancer. They can heal major injuries and replace organs.


I think that stem cell research can create many possibilities and help the human race. For that, I am with stem cell research. They open new doors and create new possibilities. Although the research isn’t completed, scientists will soon discover a way to heal injuries with the stem cell research. Spinal cord injuries can be healed and paralysis can be avoided. Many people can be healed and unnecessary deaths can be avoided. Strokes can be avoided, too. Birth defects like missing limbs can be healed with stem cells. Instead of getting organ transplants from another person, why not get a copy of your own organ to be transplanted? This and many other things are possible with stem cell research.


Stem cells have some cons, but they can be avoided with proper care and research. Cloning is already illegal, because you can’t own another human. People break the law all the time, though, right? Well, stem cells research and its products could be made so that only our government can have access to it. Which makes you think, “Can’t the government make it so they can be turned into soldiers?” Well, yeah, but the U.S. and most countries on earth abide by the Geneva Convention’s rules, and the Geneva Convention could make it illegal to have cloned soldiers. Clones may also fall into the class of Bio-Weapons, which is already illegal according to the Geneva Convention’s rules. If people are afraid that not enough research is the problem, stem cell research won’t be tested on humans until other species close to humans try it first. If the results don’t go so well on other species, the stem cell research will be conducted again and tested with a new batch.


So, as you can see, stem cell research is very promising and most of the reasons to ban it are unnecessary. Stem cells can potentially help the human race flourish and thrive. Stem cells have already been extensively tested and scientists can even achieve growing artificial human parts on lab animals, like rats. Once, a human ear was grown on a rat’s back. Although it wasn’t operational and there for aesthetic uses, it was still a giant achievement in the process of stem cell research. If they can make an ear, what else could they make? A whole head, maybe? Maybe they could make such an ear operational. Deaf people could hear again. Maybe blind people could see again, if artificial eyes could be created. The possibilities of stem cell research are endless.
