Small fractural stones fell from the top of the excavated cavern. Most of which crashed into large pools of water, separating it and sending drops everywhere. A light shone from deeper below the cavern, moving and disturbing the silent bats on the stalactites. Voices could be heard from below as metal tools smacked off the cave walls.
"Get moving! We need to make it outside before we lose our light."
The man was the first of the group that was accused of being lost in the depths of the Agi Rath. His partner, a woman, murmered in discomfort and looked up at him.
"Don't bark orders at me, Miguel! We're all equal here."
"I'm just saying."
"Well, shut up. I'm just saying."
Miguel continued climbing, pressing his hooks into the cave wall. An opulent draft crashed into both people, knocking them loose from the wall. The woman stumbled and looked back frustrated.
"I think I see some light ahead but I'm not sure. Do you see it too?"
Miguel squinted in the darkness and held onto his harness. A bulb of light appeared at the top of the wall and it seemed to be wavering back and forth.
"Yes. Were almost there. Must have been from the last excavation team."
As both people made it to the top the light slowly began to falter and wave faster. It appeared to have been a flare rolling on the ground up above. The woman had bloody marks along her right cheek bone and she had plenty of cuts along her body, giving sign that they were fighting their way back out. The woman often went by the name Liz but forced others to call her Ele.
The light faded to a constant pulse as the team made it up to ground level. With what had happened, neither Liz or Miguel had the energy to move on.
"Miguel, we need to stop. This is going to kill us before we make it out. Just take a breather."
"I don't need a breather. We need to get out! I'm not sitting in here and lessening my chances of survival."
"Look at yourself, Miguel! You're freaking bleeding to death. Don't make me kick your arse for acting so stubborn."
"I do what I want, Ele. When are you ever going to figure that out? I'm moving on. If you feel that you need to rest, then go on ahead."
Liz shook her head and spit globs of blood from her mouth.
"You bastard! I'm protecting your butt and you just ignore that?! Fine. You think you know what you're doing then go on. I'm done persuading you."
Miguel waved her off and muttered to himself as he led off down an abandoned tunnel. Liz collapsed onto the cold floor and leaned back, trying to rest up and slow down her bleeding. The light continued rolling along the walls, creating ellipses all around. Liz pulled out a canister of water and started untwisting the cap. Immediately the light projected itself on the tunnel wall and stopped rolling. She shrugged and tipped her canister for a drink. In the moment of closing her eyes she heard the tapping of small feet down the hallway and a deep moaning. The woman quickly put her canister away and stood up, pulling out her knife. The moaning grew louder as a shadow formed on the tunnel wall. The figure was tall and slim but all to ethereal. She slowly approached the tunnel and saw the shadow getting bigger as it approached in its staggered form. Fear quickly streamed through her body putting her into a state of turmoil.
The tunnels creaked as a black hand reached around the corner, grabbing a large amount of granite. Liz's eyes grew wide and she focused quietly on the hand as she continued her approach. The figure slowly pulled itself around the corner and staggered in front of her, moaning and looking at the wall of light. It cracked its neck and spun it all the way around to look at Liz, with its jaw agape.
Liz stepped backwards. holding her knife out at the unknown.
"What are you?!"
Blood seeped from the figure's teeth and rolled down its neck. It gurgled and slowly limped towards the woman.
"Oh god! This can't be true!"
She stepped even further back and looked around for a foreign object to use against it. The figure stepped out into the light and continued its approach with its straggling arms. She knew what it was and it was completely horrible. Her foot slipped on a hook and rope, and knocked her back to the ground.
The figure appeared to have been a zombie approaching her at a much faster speed than before. Instantly the zombie charged at her and moaned. Liz flipped up the hook into her open hand and swung at the zombie with both hands. She hooked the zombie with her hook and pissed it off. It leaned into her and clawed at her arm, ripping her clothing. She pressed her knife against its neck and drove it through, letting out gaseous air from its body. Her heart raced like never before and her adrenaline kicked in. She kicked the zombie in the chest, knocking it down, and pulled out a gun from her pocket. The monster's eyes started glowing red and it arched itself back up onto both feet. Liz fired off countless bullets in its chest and head slowing it down but it didn't do enough damage until she found a crowbar under a lone shelf and swung it at its head, striking straight through and sending the head down the cavern.
A moment of relief filled her body as she dropped the crowbar to the ground and examined the body. The body was coated in aged gory clothing and was mutilated. Liz stepped back in realization and saw that it was one of the excavation teams. A sudden thought ran through her head: Miguel!
Suddenly she ran off dropping the hook and sheathing the knife in her hand.
I Must.
Save.
Miguel.
