Hitler needed to control every single aspect of German life to truly create a totalitarian state. First he had to enforce this through a police state. He tasked the SS and the Gestapo as a private police force. They didn't need to give any reason for arrest. He also created concetration camps as a high security facillity for those who really angered him. The first one was opened in Dachau in 1933. Hitler also took over the legal system by creating the National Socialist League for the Maintenance of Law. All judges had to be members of this (meaning Nazi ideology is present in the judiciary).
Hitler then had to take control of religion since people would owe greater loyalty to God than Hitler. One key church was the Catholics. They had their own schools and had the pope as their leader. In July 1933, they signed a concardat stating that Catholics have freedom of worship if they don't interfere in German politics. Hitler laughed and began to break his terms. He harassed and arrested Catholic priests and banned Catholic youth groups. Pope Pius XI himself criticised the Nazi regime in his "With Burning Anxiety" statement.
At first, the Protestants were willing to work with Hitler. However, many Protestants spoke out against him such as Martin Niemoller. He set up a Pastors' Emergency League in 1933 to stop the Nazi regime. He was eventually sent to concentration camp like most opponents.
Hitler's next task was to censor German culture itself. Only Nazi views were allowed in German newspapers. Joseph Goebbels became the Minister of People's Enlightenment and Propoganda in 1933. Nice title right?
Hitler had little respect for academics but he used some to conduct research that convieniently suppirted Nazi views. Some had to agree with statements they knew weren't even true.
Hitler then took over the arts. He set up the Reich Chamber of Culture which all writers, artists, musicians and actors had to be a member of. Hitler had a simple rule for what gets approved of:
The creator must be German, the content must agree with Nazi views and it must be to Hitler's taste. Einstein's work was banned because he was strongly against Nazi views. In fact, some German students declared 10 May as 'un-German' book burning day.
Hitler and Goebbels used the radio to make broadcasts about their views and made sure there was a speaker on every street corner in Germany. They also used a cinema. A 45 minute newsreel would show the Nazi message before films and all films had to be approved of by Goebbels after 1934.
Hitler eventually got to host the German Olympic games of 1936. This was a perfect chance to show Aryan superiority to the rest of the world. He built an Olympic stadium capable of holding 110,000, smoothly organised every event and won 33 gold medals topping the medals table.
By controlling culture, religion and enforcing his rule on people with severity, Hitler was able to create a true totalitarian state with everything controlled by the Nazi
Party.
