The Dark Heart Hunters

Chapter One

The small layer of snow crunches beneath their feet ever time they take a step. At the time, now, more was falling, covering their tracks slowly. It was a light snow fall, so every 20 steps, and the first set of footprints would be erased by snow. It wasn't bad, just not a very speedy or stealth process, and they are trying their best not to be spotted.
Heart shakes the snow off of her curls and shivers, looking at Aspareta.
"Can we please go to a store and get a new outfit?," She looks down at the tears in her black North Face jacket, "Please? I think I'm getting hypothermia."
Aspareta holds her index finger to her lips, hushing Heart, and shakes her head, a small frown forming on her lips. She looks down at her own jacket, rips and patches of fur are gone. Hearts looks at her sadly and nods.
Up until a week or two ago, everything was not like this. Aspareta and Heart were living on their own in a small city. They would take things from stores, only taking what they needed and wanted, everything else was left for the other survivors-- IF THERE WERE ANY.
Occasionally creatures would come around the town, maybe once or twice a week. Some bared more of a resemblance to Satan than others, but most bared a resemblance to a child's worst nightmares. Some spat toxic slime, some had razor talons, others had wings. The list of abilities they have goes on. But every single one of them had their own weakness, and if a survivor was smart enough, he or she could easily find it. Once the weakness is found, all that is needed is the right equipment, and BAM, the monster is taken down.
There was not anything else to worry about. Aspareta and Heart would spend their times indoors doing what they enjoyed: Aspareta would write in her journal about past events and hypothesis to what was happening, and Heart would have her nose stuck in a book or drawing. Both of them were waiting for a sign, a sign telling them what they should do next.
Last week was when that all changed, the start of this "great quest" they were beginning.

The week before the present:

"Heart, will you pass me my pencil sharpener? It should be on the bookshelf."
Heart nods, grabbing the pencil sharpener, and tossing it to Aspareta.
"Thanks," Aspareta said, catching it without looking up.
Heart goes back to reading.
Suddenly there is a scratching noise at the door. Aspareta and Heart look at each other and nod. Aspareta grabs a shotgun off of the bedside table, and Heart grabs a pistol.
"Ready? I'll go first," Aspareta whispers and heads out of the room.
Heart follows a few steps behind her. They walk a few steps and another scratching noise is made at the back door. Both girls look at each other curiously, monsters usually just busted inside. They near the door, and Aspareta throws it open, gun aiming at the thing's head.
Heart stepps out from behind Aspareta, wondering why she had not fired her gun yet. Aspareta has the shotgun held to a wolf's forehead. Both of them staying in place, shocked, the wolf ducks below the gun and rubs against Aspareta's leg.
"Don't cats usually do this?," Aspareta looks at Heart with a puzzled face.
Heart shrugs and studies the wolf. She gets down on her knees and toys with the collar around its neck, finding a dog tag.
"His name is Lazer," Heart looks at Aspareta, "He's a pet. There is a number here. Do you remember if any phones work around here?"
Aspareta nods, "Yeah. Right down the street. The owners are most likely dead, but we can try calling them."
Heart slowly stands up and heads out of the house, Aspareta and Lazer following her, nearly on her heals.
The reach the phone. Aspareta picks it up, "Call the number out to me, Heart."
Heart bends over, looking at the tag again, "5-5-7-2-3-1-9-0-5-8."
As Heart calls it out Aspareta dials it.
The phone on the other end rings twice and then someone picks up.
"Hello?," A stern, deep voice spoke.
"Hi," Aspareta eyes the wolf, her eyes full or surprise.
"Oh, good. Lazer must have found you. Lets cut this short: Many survivors are gathering in North Dakota. Lazer will show you the way. Be sure to grab all of the supplies you need--," Aspareta cut him off, "--WHO ARE YOU?!"
"Me? You'll know when you get here. You know you need help, I know you need help. In this situation we ALL need help and depend on each other for survival. So, please...," the man sounds as if he is ready to plead.
"Fine. We will be there soon," Aspareta hung up.
Heart looked at her, "Heart. We need supplies and we need to leave soon."
Heart nods, not questioning what just happened.

Back to present:

Lazer turns down another street. Both girls follow him, watching their surroundings, never knowing when one of those "monsters" will pop up.
Aspareta stops, holding out her arm to signal Heart to stop. Lazer lets out a low, deep growl. Heart grabs her pistol, and pressed her back firmly against Aspareta's back.
"It seems that one of those things have found us," Aspareta smirks and chuckles lowly, despair hidden in her voice.
There was a sudden gust of icy wind. Lazer's growl grows louder, foot falls able to be heard in a distance.
"Get ready!," Aspareta holds up her shotgun, finger on the trigger, ready to fire.
