Howdy! Sl you probably saw the title and said "Uhgh" (or simular), but I really had nothing to do, once again.
So I decided to do this French class, covering the basics of French. It could be very useful on vacations
--Intro--
French is a language which is mostly spoken in France, Eastern Canada and Africa. It is a little more complicated than English.
--Basic Words--
Here is a list of useful words. The "/" seperate synonymes.
Hello-Allo/Salut/Bonjour
Bye-À la prochaine
--Pronunciation--
The pronunciation in French is a little diffrent than English, here are the basics. I will try to write the way to pronounce word in English.
P.S These letters are not how to say the letters of the alphabet, but the are how you should pronounce the letter in most words. Then I will explain how to say 2 letter sounds.
A-Ah
I-Ee
O-Short O
U-The U of the Lu sound
The other letters are pronounced in the same way as in English.
Keep in mind it is perfectly normal if you can't say the sounds the first time.
Ou-Oo
An/En-Simular to "Ah", but close your lips a little
Oi-Wha
On-Like the word Ohm, but with an "n" that is said shortly, replacing the "m" in "Ohm"
Au-Short O
LL- Sometimes said like a normal "L", but in some words it is said like the "Y" sound in "Yes"
Ain/In-The "Ain" sound of "Train"
Ait/Ais/È/Ê-Eh
Er/Ez/É/Ai-The "ee" sound, but close your lips quite allot.
Ch-Sh
I told you it's complicated
--Adjectives--
All nouns in French are either Feminine or Masculine and are either Singular or Plural. So, for example "House" or "Maison" in French is Feminine. Also, "Dog", or "Chien" in French is Masculine.
Because of this, words have to be adapted.
Lets say we are walking on a street and we see a cat, which is "Chat" in French. The cat is brown, "Brun" in French. Brown Cat is "Chat Brun" in French.
In most sentences, the noun and the adjective are inverted in French compared to English. Brown cat becomes "Chat Brun".
Now you see another cat, and it is brown too. Brown cats. In French, you adapt the adjective with the word. The word is Masculine and Plurial. All adjectives are Masculine at default. So you would say "Chats Bruns".
--Contractions--
There are quite allot of contractions in French, but compared to English, they are necessairy.
When there is a word that ends with "e" or "a"and the next word starts with "e" , "o", "u", "i"or "a", you remove the letter from the end of the last word and replace it with a ['] and you contract both words together. So, "Je aime", or "I love" has to be written like "J'aime".
--Verbs--
Verbs in French are way more complicated than in English.
All verbs have a pronoun.
Lets check out the verb "Aimer", to "Love". This will be in the Present. We use the present to talk about things that are currently happening or that are currently in a certain way. All verbs that finish with "er" conjugate in the same way.
J'aimE - I love
Tu aimES - You love
Il aimE - He/It loves
Elle aimE - She/It loves
Nous aimONS - We love
Vous aimEZ - You love
Elles aimENT -They love (Feminine)
Ils aimENT - They love (Masculine)
Since each noun is either Masculine or Feminine, the "They" pronoun is split up into a masculine "they" and a feminine "they" in French. Also, there is no "it" pronoun. Nearly all verbs that finish with "er" finish with the letters I put in capital.
Keep in mind that "Il" is actually "IL". Also, you say the pronouns like this:
Je-Jhuh
Tu-The "u" is said like the "u" in Yuuuuu
Il-Say the "i" as a normal "i", but bring your tongue to your upper jaw.
Elle-Say the letter "L"
Nous-Noo
Vous-Voo
Ils/Elles-The same way as Il/Elle.
Another verb, "Regarder", or to "Look".
Je regarde
Tu regardes
Elle regarde
Nous regardons
Vous regardez
Ils regardent
Elles regardent
The car loves-L'auto aime or Il aime
--Déterminants--
These words are exactly like "The" and "a"/"an".
Before a Masculine word, you use the word "Le". You say "Le" like "Luh".
The dog-Le chien
If it is a Feminine word, you use the word "La".
The door-La porte
Also, to say "a", you say "un" for Masculine words and "une" for Feminine words.
A door-Une porte
A cat-Un chat
--Conclusion--
So there you go, the basics of French. You might find this quite difficult, so you can check out youtube for pronunciations and online lessons for more help.
