Once there was a boy in a town. The town was called Slidersville for reasons not even the best historians could discover. The boy is called Jimmy. He has no special skills, hidden abilities, incredible talents, or other abnormalities. He goes to school every morning and comes back every afternoon. In short, he's ordinary. His life continued in this boring, ordinary fashion till he was 10. Today is a week before the science fair, where our story begins.
1. The Fair, The Book, and The Project
"JIMMY, WAKE UP FOR SCHOOL NOW! IT'S ALMOST 7:09!" Jimmy's mother screamed.
"WE ONLY HAVE 41 MINUTES TILL SCHOOL! GET OUT OF BED! WAKE UP! ARE YOU LISTENING?" Jimmy rolled over in bed, groaning.
"Aww, but it's saturday," he said.
"I DON'T CARE! WE ONLY HAVE A MONTH TILL THE SCIENCE FAIR, AND YOU HAVEN'T EVEN PICKED A TOPIC!" His mother yelled. Jimmy then leaped out of bed onto the floor.
"I do TOO have a topic, I'm going to build a volcano thing."
But his mother became even more furious at that statement. "A VOLCANO? A VOLCANO?!?! EVERY YEAR YOU MAKE A VOLCANO! PICK SOMETHING ELSE!" Jimmy replied by mentioning that he had built a rocket last year, but that didn't help matters. His mother left the room still fuming, and Jimmy still needed a topic.
"I know! I'll write a report on the local Slidersville wildlife. But first I'll need a book on the local birds so I can identify them. Off to the library!
So Jimmy went to the library, which happened to be next door.
"How conveinient," he exclaimed, " that the library is next door to my house." A man walking past heard him and asked him why he hadn't noticed.
"I'm not the most attentive person," he explained.
"Whatever. Anyway, the library is closed, it's Holiday Name Here Day, the day that celebrates the lack of creativity in the world, ironically being creative itself."
"I hate today."
