The Dark Heart Hunters

Chapter 5

Heart coughs, smoke filling her lungs. She is numb, her body feeling weightless, as if she is floating in midair. She coughs again, this time blood comes out of her mouth, she begins to feel a burning sensation, and she slowly falls back into the blackness.

This time when the blackness takes over there are images, a video clip in the back of her head, but there is no audio that goes with the scene.

~Beginning of the Dream~

The world around her is on fire, nearly barren and charred land, no sign of a living thing anywhere in sight. There are bones everywhere, bones of animals, and…. The bones of humans. A wicked smile forms on her face, she tries to push it back down, but she can’t. A dark, sudden laugh slips from her lips, one that she cannot suppress. There are screams off in the distance. Heart suddenly turns and looks in the direction the screams came from, and she lets out another dark laugh.

The clip switches from first person to third person in a split second. There is a dark, shadowy figure chasing a young girl who looks to be about 13 years old. The young girl trips over her own feet and turns so she lands on her back. She takes out a pocket knife from her side pocket and opens it. The shadow nears closer to her. As it draws closer to its prey it slows down, antagonizing the girl. The young girl lets out a shriek.

Hearts turns away as the shadowy figure attacks the helpless girl. Her eyes land on the woman who’s eyes she was seeing through before. Heart tries to scream, but she can’t. She’s hoping that what she is seeing cannot be the truth. The woman is her. She is dressed a lot differently, in a shorter skirt made of some type of fur, a shirt that didn’t cover her bellybutton, and she had fur boots on. What scared her the most were the sudden black and red glowing tattoos that formed on her body.

The shadow neared her and she whispered something to it. Heart tried to listen but all she could hear was the silence that had always been there. She tried to scream for help again, but it is useless. What Heart sees next is something that fills her with disgust and fear. The shadow figure leans onto Heart, morphs onto her body, and makes another heart shaped vine tattoo on her.

~End of Dream~

Heart’s eyes quickly open. She gasps for air, but more smoke fills her burning lungs. She slowly begins to sit up, pushing the rubble off of her wounded body.

“Role call!” She yells weakly, coughing loudly after.

There is no answer, no sign of life.

“DAMN IT! YOU LAZY BUMS ANSWER ME!” She yells again, this time her voice is stronger.

“Here” Said a shaky man’s voice.

“Alive!” Said a strong feminine voice.

“SHUT UP, NOOB, I WAS NAPPING!” Said a deep, masculine voice.

Heart sighs loudly in relief.

“Get up!” She yells as she brushes the ashes and remainder of rubble off of herself.

There was a low whimper off in the distance. Heart’s eyes flutter off in the direction which the noise came from. LAZER!

“Guys, help me find Lazer!” Heart yells as she rushes off in the direction the whimper came from.

Slowly the others begin to rise to their feet and follow her. By the time they got over to her, Heart was already moving rubble from place to place, looking for their ally.

“Move.” Jesse says, pushing her out of the way, dragging Myst with him.

Within a few minutes Myst and Jesse have Lazer out from under the rubble. Heart slowly steps towards the, and lets out a loud gasp. The smell of blood fills the air. Aspareta steps around Heart to see why she had gasps, and stumbles back, her hand covers her mouth. She turns around and heads in the opposite direction.

Heart takes another step toward Lazer, “Someone, go get a bucket of water. Jesse, give me your belt! HURRY!”

Myst grabs a bucket that has been tied on his bike and heads toward a river in the woods, Aspareta follows after him.

Jesse slips his belt off and hands it to Heart. He inspects the wound closely and chokes back a gag.

“What are you planning…?” He whispers lowly.

“You’ll see.” Heart says, grasping the belt tightly in her hand.

-An hour or so later-

“Are you sure that you don’t want any help?” Myst asks Heart.

“Yeah, I’m sure. He’s not that heavy. Just scout ahead and look for any sign of life.” Heart replies, slightly out of breath.

Myst nods and jogs ahead, catching up to Jesse.

“Hey, Heart?” Aspareta whispers.

“Yeah?” Heart glances over at her.

“Where do you think they’ve gone…?” Aspareta looks at the ground.

“Who?” Heart continues to look at her, her eyes growing soft.

“Everyone. Mom, Dad, my friends…”

Heart follows her gaze and looks down, “I… I don’t know.”

Aspareta shakes her head and glances up, disappointment on her face.

“But wherever they are, they’re better off than we are.” Heart smirks and laughs softly.

Aspareta was about to reply when Myst comes running back to them, a happy grin on his face.

“I think we’ve found them!” He says, nearly jumping up in excitement.

Heart and Aspareta nod at each other and begin to job ahead to where Jesse has stopped.

Jesse nods down to a giant hole in the ground, “I think it’s down here.”

Heart takes a in a deep breath and hands Lazer to Jesse. She begins to head down the steep slope, heading deep into the hole. As they got deeper and deeper into the hole, it became more and more silent. It also got slicker and damper. Heart reaches the end of the slope to a dark hallway with a dark wooden door at the very end. The group stops and looks at each other.

Lazer lets out another whimper in pain. Heart nods at all of them and begins to head toward the door. She taps on it once. She taps on it again, this time it opens by itself.

“HELLO, IS ANYONE--"Heart stops and nearly screams in shock.

Within a few seconds of her entering the hideout someone has her at gunpoint and turned toward the ground. The gun at her temple and a hand over her mouth, which is still opened lightly in shock.

“Who are all of you,” The mysterious figure asks, “Tell me or your friend here gets her brain blown to bits!"
