It was a bright and sunny day, the first one in quite a while for the central Japan area. A young girl, however, was unaware of such weather, as she was inside her house, seated on her bed watching TV. Her favorite show was on, and she didn’t want to miss it. Something had always seemed off about this show—the characters and setting seemed like she’d known them before—but that was the main reason she enjoyed it. She loved the inexplicable feeling of nostalgia it gave her. However, something strange happened—something that didn’t seem familiar. The main character looked directly into the camera, with a terrified look in his eyes that seemed too genuine to just be him acting, and the TV shut off. The girl groaned and allowed herself to fall back on her bed.
“Mom! TV cut out again!” she called out, receiving no response. She slowly sat up, allowing a few strands of dark brown hair to fall into her face as she did so. She had forgotten that her parents had gone missing after her brother was chosen to go to a private academy. She had no memory of anything before that, either—the only thing she knew was that her name was Komaru, and her older brother’s was Makoto, just like the main character of the show. He looked a lot like the character, too—he had the same light brown hair and green eyes, and even the same clothes. The girl had never thought much about it, she had just assumed that the show was a production of the academy and its drama team. Sighing, she climbed off her bed, walking over to the TV and looking behind it. The wires were broken, as if an animal had chewed through them. There was a note beside the wreck, and Komaru reached to pick it up, holding it up and reading it out loud.
"You're in a Simulation. This is not the real world. Wake up. Signed, G.S." She frowned, setting the note down on her TV stand. "G.S., G.S.... Those initials sound so familiar," she muttered to herself. Suddenly, she heard a rustling in the bushes outside her window, and she jumped in surprise.
"Wake up. Hope is gone. You must replace him. Wake up," a feminine voice said as Komaru poked her head out the window. She looked down, glaring at the bush, and the voice said one last thing.
"Your brother is gone."
