A label is assigned
of the smartness of your mind
and puts you in a bind
because of those that are blind
to human integrity
and personality
a number put about your head
to them is all you can be
and that's the problem now
with society unrefined
it's always walking right on by
not catching anyone's true eye.
But I am undefined
and I will not be blind
to the terrible things around me
because I have a great "mind."

You look at me and say
"But you're such a smart girl,"
and while that's all great
I also want a day
where people that have trouble
aren't looked at in a light
that means that all that they'll amount to
is guns and gang fights.

I want to see a day
where people aren't judged
by how well they do on a test
and grouped with the rest.
You can't test integrity
or what their homelife is right now
there isn't a single question
that can help you know what it's like
with their sadness all that you know.

"But your life is fine,"
and while that is divine
there are still a thousand good children
standing in a line
with labels based on their dreads
walking into a life where they are judged
simply by what is in their heads.

I cannot rest in a society
where a number or an insult
is all people truly think other humans will surmount to be.
I will not sleep until I see
children who have yet to be
going into a life ahead
not afraid of showing all they are.
I cannot rest until they see
that everyone is a star.
Truly, I will always believe
that everyone can go far.

A label is ripped off
by children that are here
because they know that words are nothing they should have to fear.
A label in a fire
that's burning with desire
to slowly tear away those words that others used to jeer.
Sing a song of your true selves
and make sure that they can hear.
