Today we are going to take a look at Woah Dave! which is a new indie game released by Choice Provisions and some of the developers that brought you BIT.TRIP. It is available on iOS from the App Store, PC from Steam, 3DS from the eShop, and coming soon to Android through Google Play. It's also on PS Vita. But no one cares, right?
As you may know, I am a sucker for all things indie. VVVVVV, Super Hexagon, Mutant Mudds, Shantae, Shovel Knight, you name it. Virtually any indie game I find I try. Some are extremely good, but others no so much. The good ones usually contain a intuitive concept and some decent music. And Woah Dave! is no exception.
CONCEPT
That's you!
The concept in Woah Dave! is actually remarkably simple, yet so intuitive that just keeps me playing.
Basically items fall onto the arena randomly. There are throwable items and enemies. The throwable items include an egg, which hatches onto an enemy, a skull bomb, which is also throwable until it explodes, and the WOAH block, which functions exactly like a POW block.
In fact, look how similar it looks to a POW block.
Woah.
This game have several other references to other videogames. I'll let you find those on your own.
Enemies include a UFO, a flying eye thing with wings, and three one-eyed brain thing creatures. These can all be destroyed with one of the three throwable items. Each for a PENNY.
YES, A PENNY.
Talk about some serious loot.
But, let's face it. Even Mr. Krabs would do anything for a penny nowadays.
And that's how the score system is based. Dollars and pennies.
So if you REALLY REALLY were to try, your high score would probably be a few dollars. $3 or something. Trust me, it is hard to get that much.
But remember.
FEATURES
Right after downloading, the only mode you can play in is Normal. After you've redeemed yourself by collecting $1.50 as your high score or more, you'll unlock Bonkers mode.
HAH.
GET IT? REDEEMED?
No? Okay.
Bonkers mode is basically the Normal mode on cocaine. Lots of more enemies and throwable items are spawned. Much more difficult, but more rewarding and fun. Lots of money.
MONEY.
BONKERS = MONEY.
I believe the console versions of this game also have multiplayer, but I'll have to check that out a later.
CONTROLS
The controls are really pretty simple. Use Y to throw objects and B to jump. There's nothing to it. Anyone can learn in less than 5 minutes.
If you are playing it on a touch screen device, such as iOS, one button is used to jump and another to throw, and the left and right arrows to move. Same controls, just without the buttons, as you can see above.
GRAPHICS
Since this is an old-school style arcade game, it is undoubtable that it would have 8-bit graphics. And it does.
There's really nothing extraordinary here. The graphics are good, but there are no flashy colors or too much detail. Everything is nice and simple. I like it that way, but some others may prefer more detailed graphics.
Also, I really don't like the color pallete that much. I wish they kept it to darker colors. But not that big of a problem.
THIS ART IS MISLEADING. THE ENEMIES ARE NOT AS UGLY AND STRANGE AS THEY ARE PORTRAYED HERE. THEY ARE MUCH CUTER IN GAME.
DAVE IS NOT AS UGLY EITHER.
MUSIC
There are only a few songs in this game, which is quite disappointing. They progress in intensity and change as you progress in the arena without dying. They are pretty good, but can get somewhat repetitive.
I don't find myself turning the volume off at all because of the repetitiveness, though.
I wish they could've added a couple of more songs. This is the aspect of the game which I find lacking the most.
PRICE
This game has a hefty price tag of $5 for what it really is.
Honestly, it feels like a $3 game at the most. Not saying it is a bad game, just a bit expensive. For $5, you're getting a great game with a great concept and is very addicting. You're also promised updates. So it is up to you.
SUMMARY
Woah Dave! is an amazing indie game and is worth checking out. If you've played Super Crate Box on Steam or iOS before, then you are already familiar with the mechanics of this game.
Overall, the graphics are good, music is pretty meh, but the concept makes the game. It is tons of fun and I can't stop playing. I really hope they update it in the near future with more stuff, though.
