Bumped, because you really need to play this game.
Hello, scrublords.
Today we are going to review Super Hexagon, which is one of my favorite indie games of all time. It's also one of the most rage-inducing games I've played.
Seriously. I mean it.
This game is
ugh
ing difficult.
Super Hexagon is more of a time-killer game, but it is still indie and unique in every way. It is available on Google Play, the App Store, Steam, and the developer's website for Windows and Mac for around $2-5. It's tons of fun, and it's totally worth it.
Who's the developer you may ask? Why, it's none other than Terry Cavanagh. The genius mastermind behind VVVVVV. If you played VVVVVV or any of his other games, you know what to expect.
DESIGN
COLORS!
COLORS!!
COLORS!!!
That's right. Colors. Don't play this game expecting your eyes not to explode to the colors.
It's like an LSD trip.
Besides the colors of each stage, it sort of has a retro feel to it. I don't know what's up with indie developers and retro, but I like it. It's not 8-bit or 16-bit (at least in appearance), but it does have that retro vibe to it. Like an old PC game. Or one of those Flash games you used to play on the school's computers as a kid.
It's minimalistic and flashy, just like all of Terry's games, which is why it is really enjoyable and fun. The colors are unbelievable. The retro vibe is always a plus. There's really nothing negative I can say about the design.
Perhaps maybe less color.
BUT WHO DOESN'T LIKE COLOR?
CONTROLS & GAMEPLAY
Just like all of Terry's games, they all have extremely simple controls that require virtually no learning power.
All you do is use two keys to move the little triangle around to avoid getting hit by walls coming towards you, as you can see above. That's it. Left and right. Simple to learn.
But.
Hard to master.
VERY
more ugh
ing hard to master.
As you progress through out all the stages, or try the game out for the first time, you'll definetly understand what I mean. Trust me. You will.
I've spent quite a few hours on this game. Maybe around 20? 50? I have no bloody idea. How many times have I gotten rekt? At least 50,000 times. Literally. But it is my go-to game when bored. It's the perfect time killer. Definetly worth the money.
OBJECTIVE
The objective is simple. Move your triangle around the hexagon, which is the master of all things in this game, while hundreds of walls come at you at different speeds, depending on what stage you try, and try not to get rekt.
The scoring system is measured by time. The time you survive without hitting a wall and wrecking your little triangle. You're also given a rank for how much you survive for each stage. 0-9 seconds = Point, 10 seconds = Line, 20 = Triangle, 30 = Square, 45 = Pentagon, 60+ = Hexagon.
The difficulty starts out at Hard. There is no such thing as "easy" in this game. It progresses from Hard, to Harder, to Hardest, to Hardester, to Hardestest, to even Hardestestest correspondingly.
Trololol.
You will probably not get more than a few seconds on your first thousand tries, on the EASIE--cough, I mean, LEAST HARD stage, and it will make you feel like you're the biggest piece of
caca
to play a game.
But trust me, you will get better. Because patterns. You'll see what I mean when you try it.
Your goal is to get at least sixty seconds on every single stage. If you get sixty seconds on the three regular stages, HEXAGON, HEXAGONER, AND HEXAGONEST, you will unlock the Hyper Modes for those levels correspondingly, which are also another three stages.
That's right. HYPER MODE stages. Just when you think it can't get more difficult, it does.
And if you get sixty seconds on a stage, you don't stop. You keep going. Until you get rekt. And it gets progressively more difficult the more time you survive.
Your ultimate goal is to get at least sixty seconds on all six stages, which include the Hyper Modes.
Have fun with that.
MUSIC
My favorite part.
Just like in VVVVVV, the music is so damn good that it just keeps you playing, no matter how frustrated you are by getting rekt so much.
There are only three tunes to listen to, though. One for each stage design, excluding the Hyper Mode stages. That's a bit barebone, yes.
But I can't complain, because the three tunes it does have are so damn good.
It's 8-bit techno, and it's composed by another genius chiptune composer from the U.K. named chipzel, or Niamh Houston. It's amazing and upbeat. She makes all of her music using a GameBoy with LSDJ.
Also check out her newest album! She makes a ton of great chiptune music.
My favorites are Forged In Stars, Evolution, and Only Human from that album.
SUMMARY
Super Hexagon is an amazing game in every way. It is challenging, minimalistic, and a great time killer. Most importantly, it has amazing music.
It's much better than any of those other crappy mobile games. It's price tag makes the game a bargain, too. It's really addicting, so beware!
