7. Laser Allegations
With Russia chasing a crucial 3 points in their final group game against surprise package, Algeria, they easily took the lead through an Aleksandr Kokorin driving header. However, the Algerians equalized through a controversial goal, in which Russian Goalkeeper was seen blinking at green colored lasers pointing to his eyes, which is said to have distracted him and allowed a goal. The calls were ignored and Russia were dumped out of the World Cup. After the tournament, investigations were made and The Algerian association of Football were fined.

6. 5-2, should have been 3-3?
France, who were coming from a disappointing World Cup in 2010 came into the tournament as one of the teams expected to win. They started of with easing through Honduras 3-0, through a Benzema double strike and an own goal by the Honduran goalkeeper. France's next group game was against Switzerland, who had conceded only 2 goals in there last 8 world cup matches. The French took the lead with an Oliver Giroud header and went 2-0 up in a minute through a defensive mistake by Behrami, however the Swiss pulled one back through Granit Xhaka, but was denied through offside, which replays showed were onside. The French then scored a 3rd and 4th goal, which replays showed were offside. The French went on to defeat Switzerland 5-2, a match which should have ended 3-3.

5. Simunic banned from World Cup
FIFA has banned Croatia defender Josip Simunic for 10 games - including the entire World Cup - for leading fans in a pro-Nazi chant after the team qualified for the tournament in Brazil.

Simunic invoked a World War II-era slogan used by Croatia's then-puppet regime following a 2-0 playoff victory against Iceland last month. FIFA also fined Simunic 30,000 Swiss francs ($33,800) and ordered the Croatia football federation to pay a fine of 70,000 Swiss francs ($78,700).
Simunic previously defended his action, saying he was driven by love for his country.
The Australia-born player famously was sent off at the 2006 World Cup against Australia after receiving three yellow cards.
