I'm your teacher, Mr. BanMan, and we're going to learn about the development of computer graphics.
Remember when this looked cool?
Well, it doesn't anymore.
Clipart is no longer a reputable-looking part of advertising material. There was a time when businesses could use a program like Microsoft Publisher to create brochures and add a level of professionalism by throwing in some clipart.
Or they could use Powerpoint to create slideshows for their business, and clipart added a nice accent to the boring text that is in every single business presentation. It's a lot easier to endure a slideshow looking at little pictures than it is to read text in fifteen seconds that takes the presenter five minutes to explain.
But back in the day, clipart was how you made your work stand out to people! Microsoft and other companies even had built in capabilities for clipart libraries in their programs. That way you could easily insert the pictures without having to use an external program or access your dial-up internet!
What once was a standard is now outdated. In fact, it's so old that Microsoft is done giving people the clipart in their programs. Now they want you to Google for images.
Uh
I mean
bing it
There I said it. Ahem. See, nowadays, we can just find beautiful pictures on the internet of landscapes or offices or people that don't have old fashioned GIF artifacts in them. That's so cool!
And you'll look a whole lot more professional now using stock photos instead of clipart that looks like it's visiting from the 1990s.
Although clipart is now old and outdated, it had its uses. There was pretty much clipart for any kind of presentation or project.
I'm not sure whether that would be okay in a funeral brochure or not.
And then there's WordArt. Remember how
it was? People still use it for some things, although a modern design typically uses plain text in a clean font. But WordArt has improved so much over the years compared to that, so it's adapted over time.
Whereas clipart
looks old
because it is old.
So in review, today we learned a little bit about history! And don't use clipart!
