we're just ghosts
on the lining of the unrest
and our hearts 
can be seen in our chest

but they're not beating anymore
you said it's because we were dead
but really it's because
the day I lost my head

we're just birds
on the power line overlooking town
and you used to have a smile
but now you only frown
whatever happened to never looking down?

but we can't see
anything but the darkness of this night
and what you want would be be
anything but losing your love for me

we're just words
in a poem from a creative hand
and our letters are like worlds
that only we understand

because we whisper to each other
brought to life by a pen 
and our pulses are made up of
the hearts we tried to open

we're just stars 
in the sky that shone 
and the light that emanated
was not a visible one

because it came from a place
where the eye could not embrace
or even try to feel
but it was surely real

we're just hands
entangled as one
and our warmth 
shows we aren't alone

because we hold
not only each other
but we hold each other's hopes
so tightly we couldn't be cold

that met my face
in that night
full of fragile grace

"don't ever let me go"
and I whispered back
"that's something I would never do"

and you're just light
that shines your way
to something right
and something bright

because you told me that day
you didn't have a future you could know
but all I have to pave my way
is that I love you

and we're just lights
bouncing in the nights
where we felt like we could never die
that's where I feel right

and you shine in my heart
as you kiss me there
and I know that I'd meet you anywhere
please never ask me to part

and we're just notes
in a song you wrote me
and we stay in place
because you're all I want to see

and you play it in my heart
and my mind
and my words
resounding with a spark 
you're the muse in my world

because I'm in love
with the way you shine
and resound
such beautiful sounds

and I know I'll do
anything I can
I know it's you
because we can make it through
