I might as well be done. You already know it's a good game from the title.
Just go out and buy it, no questions asked.
And you'll have an amazing time with it.
Basically if you don't own this game, you haven't known what it is to become a squid.
And you know, it's pretty awesome to be a squid.
When I first learned about Splatoon during E3 2014, I thought it was a really weird concept. I mean, who changes from a kid to a squid? But it became more normal after a while. I got used to it.
And it is amazing. Being able to be free. Free to be a kid, free to be a squid.
Squid, kid, squid, kid, squid, kid. You don't have to settle for just one when you can be both.
This is a game that I've played super long sessions with more than once. It's so fun.
You'll get inky and it's wonderful. The places and the characters are so cool, it's like the in-game world is somewhere you'd like to actually visit.
Like, the squid sisters would be awesome to hang out with. And the shop owners too.
#TeamMarie is cooler.
But what is the gameplay like?
I'm not going to go too deep into how the mechanics work, but essentially you shoot ink from your weapon of choice in kid form, and swim in your team's colored ink in squid form.
Oh, and you play online. There's a single player mode which is a nice distraction if you get on a big losing streak online and want to do something less frustrating where the pro squiddies can't ink you, but the online is where you'll play most.
You're set in 4 vs 4 matches with the teams made up of squid children. The main mode is Turf War, where you try to cover the most ground in a stage with your team's colored ink.
Once you git gud, you're offered new modes online in a mode called Ranked Battle. The match objectives vary in Ranked, but all involve either keeping control of a zone the longest or getting an item to its destination first.
Nintendo rolls out updates every few weeks that add new content, such as weapons or stages, so I guess you could say it helps the game
stay fresh.
There isn't really a lot I don't think is great about the game. I've clocked nearly 200 hours at this point, and I'm still not tired of it.
It's so satisfying to get your ink all over things and splat other squid children. And swimming feels so perfect, too.
The visuals are so bright and colorful, and there are settings in the world that you wouldn't find in a lot of other games. The ink reflects light nicely, and squids leave subtle trails when maneuvering through their ink.
And the jams in Splatoon are totally awesome. The music's a little different from the style you'd expect from Nintendo, but it's top quality stuff, complete with squid vocals. And in case you were wondering, squid vocals are amazing.
But not everything is so hawt.
One issue is that stages are set on four hour periods. Two stages are chosen for Regular Battle and two for Ranked, and each match picks one of its current choices at random. It's not super annoying to me, but letting players vote or even having the game randomly pick from any stage would be better.
And every time you start the game, you have to go through a broadcast by the squid sisters announcing the current stages. But the squid sisters host it, so it isn't all bad.
Notice that these things don't really affect the gameplay directly though, so the negatives here shouldn't affect your decision to buy the game.
