I woke up when I heard a crash of thunder, shaking our small shack. I rubbed my eyes and sat up, looking around the room. I saw Jason's small figure, sound asleep in his bed. I was aware of the rain coming down fast, hitting the roof in a never ending rhythm. It was 1:36am.
I blinked my eyes tiredly, got up out of bed, and went into the kitchen. I couldn't really go back to sleep when something woke me up. I hated it, because I always ended up tired. I grabbed a mini orange off the dirty counter. And then I saw it: a strange light, coming from behind the small pantry.
I frowned slightly and rubbed my eyes. It was probably a hallucination. I glanced at the light again. It was still there, but glowing a little brighter. I walked towards it, and then it came into my full view. It was some type of animal, between a fox and a wolf. And it was glowing, floating in midair.
I cautiously put my hand through it. It wasn't even solid. But then the fox-wolf said my name.
"Gyani," It said in a soft voice. I couldn't tell if it was male or female.
I jumped back in surprise and bit my lower lip.
"W-what? What are you?" I stuttered nervously.
"I am an Evik. I have come to ask you a question," the Evik said thickly.
An Evik? What the hell is that?
I gritted my teeth in anticipation.
"Ask away," I said quietly.
The strange animal looked me up and down, disapprovingly.
"Why did you act so reckless? You let someone see that you were different. You basically broke a law," the Evik explained.
I broke a law? By letting Sam see me? What the hell.
"By letting Sam see me?" I asked suspiciously. The Evik simply shook it's head.
"Then who saw me?" I demanded.
"Dan saw you," the Evik stated. I swear, it even rolled it's eyes.
"What? Dan's like me! Are you... Telling the truth?" I blabbed, glaring at the strange animal.
"Yes, I'm telling the truth. You must kill Dan. He is not like you. He is simply a perfect with a genetic mutation. If this mutation continues, than your kind will be in danger."
I gasped. Kill Dan? This has to be a dream. I looked at the light switch on the wall. If I could turn it on, then I would know if I was in a dream. I flicked it, and it moved up, perfectly. I quickly turned it off.
It was real. I have to kill my best friend.
"What is this genetic mutation?" I asked softly.
"It allows Dan to become like you. He has many skills, you see. We have been researching this for quite a while. There are others like him, but you are the only one who can kill him. Only you can obtain the skill I am about to give you," The Evik explained.
This was all too much to take in. I had to kill Dan and others... But a new skill?
"Umm, it's not really my birthday yet. And even if it was, I wouldn't get a skill," I explained.
The Evik just stared at me.
"You need to have it," was all it said, before it reached out and touched me with its paw. The light spread through me, it filled up my body, till I was glowing myself. And then it began to disappear, the room becoming dark once more. The Evik was no where to be seen.
