I'm pretty sure at this point everyone is aware that I fucking adore Doom. I like it a lot, as much as my cold little heart can love anything. Which is apparently quite a lot since Doom 2016 became my favorite game in a very small amount of time. If you didn't know any of that, then either you live under a rock or just never talked to me, which is understandable not gonna lie, but either way now you know.
I've never really until recently thought about why I love Doom so much for seemingly no reason though. I'd assume everyone else just thinks I like it so much because of the gore and brutality in the ways you can slaughter demons. Which I mean you wouldn't be wrong in all honesty I do really like that about Doom. But I think the real reason I like Doom so much is because it got me to try new things.
Before I ever played Doom I'd never really played a First Person Shooter, and I didn't know that many outside of Call of Duty. I'd played a little bit of Call of Duty with my stepdad, but I didn't really like the game and I assumed most Fps's would be similar. So I assumed I just wouldn't like or be good at any fps games so I didn't bother trying any.
I did know about Doom, but only vaguely and from what I always heard people say about it I figured it'd be too hard for me to play and I wouldn't like it. So for a real long time I was never interested in Doom. I just ended up forgetting it was a thing in all honesty. I don't think I even remember hearing about Doom 2016 when it came out, but in all fairness I don't remember 2016 at all.
The only reason I even ended up trying Doom 2016 was because I found the soundtrack on YouTube and started listening to it. I fucking loved it so I ended up getting Doom 2016 on the thought process of "I like the music, I bet I'll like the game." So a year ago today I bought Doom 2016 on a whim because of it's music.
And that was honestly the best 20 bucks I ever spent.
If I hadn't bought the game, or even just decided to try listening to it's soundtrack I never would have realized I like metal and I probably never would have ended up playing Borderlands and loving it too.
Seriously just trying a game on a whim because I impulse buy things got me into so many other things and I'm really grateful for that. Doom is honestly the reason I'm more willing to try things I've thought previously I wouldn't like or be good at. Doom is legitimately the reason I won't say I don't like FPS games anymore, because I do like them, I just don't like ones like Call of Duty. Doom is the reason I've started listening to more Metal bands. I never really listened to Metal before this, I just figured I wouldn't like it. Boy was I wrong.
I will honestly credit Doom with being the reason I was willing to try Borderlands 2 when it was free on PS+. They aren't even that similar but just the fact that I was pleasantly surprised I ended up liking Doom so much even though for the longest time I figured I wouldn't gave me the willingness to try something else I thought I wouldn't like.
Now here we are and I love Doom and Borderlands about equally, but Doom a little more so.
Doom is honestly just a really special game in my heart at this point and I wouldn't have it any other way. It got me to try new things and it was the first game besides Portal 2 I ever played through the campaign more than once. I am so legitimately happy I bought a game on a whim based on nothing but it's music. Doom has changed so many of my opinions on things I never thought I'd end up changing.
Hell I love the original 2 Doom games and I never would have tried them if I hadn't ended up playing Doom 2016. This is honestly the only game I can think of that's gotten me to try so many different things, I mean I guess it's not much of a stretch I would have ended up playing the original Doom if I liked 2016. But I never would have played any of them if I hadn't played 2016 at all.
I know I'm generally negative and my thing is comically ranting and complaining but I decided to be positive on something. I'm bad at explaining my positive feelings on things so this was probably a mess, but I love Doom and I'm willing and ready to gush about it to people who will listen, just ask Mimi at this point I'm almost certain I've explained most of the game to her.
Doom is just a special game for me I guess, it lead to me trying and finding other games I've ended up loving and I'm just really happy Doom is a game franchise that exists. I doubt I'll find a game that I love as much and has lead to me liking so many new things.

I mean Doom is the first and then there's Doom 2. Doom 3 is a weird middle child and kind of its own thing and I'm not even sure what Doom 2016 is. Its like a reboot but not a reboot.

Probably the original 2. I never finished 3 and Doom 2016 takes me a couple days.
