Skyward Sword (SS) was the last large title Legend of Zelda (LoZ) game released for the Wii and also the last large LoZ before Breath of the Wild (BotW). Unlike Twilight Princess (TP) SS took full advantage of the Wii’s controversial features. The reason for this is because similar to BotW for the Switch/Wii U TP was released for the GameCube and Wii so Nintendo presumably didn’t want the games to be too different. SS is the first game (to my knowledge) that you spend a good 25% of the game in the clouds (called Sky Loft in the game) traveling down to Hyrule.
To be honest SS was my very first LoZ game in my entire life and was actually a large part of why I’m such a large fan of Nintendo to this day. As most of you know LoZ games follow a similar pattern to each other. Each has different items with some similarities or the same couple items across games, typically set in Hyrule with the same regions. All of that is still the same, but for the first time you fighting enemies can be taken to a different level. This is because of the Wii’s motion control which lead you to diagonal, vertical, and horizontal slices.
The later of the two aren’t actually new but aren’t easily performed on purpose but with the Wii remote you can easily control which of the three you do. For me personally the dungeons and other various side quests were a lot more fun in Sky Loft because of the motion controls.
Some may argue that with this specific game you actually have to stand to play and yes that’s true, but that’s also what the Wii was targeted to do so..... don’t play Wii games if you really don’t want to stand. There were times during my original play through years ago that I would legitimately have to take breaks because of me getting physically exhausted while swinging my Wii remote as Link. For me personally I see that as a plus, it also prevented me from playing through the game in large chunks of time, but if I ever did I was rewarded with exercise and a good story.
Speaking of story, it seems this game gets over looked because of its controls. So a lot of people probably won’t know this but, personally this game has been one of the most well written LoZ games I’ve ever played, especially compared to BotW. Don’t get me wrong, BotW is a phenomenal game, but Skyward sword has a significantly better storyline. You can see Link develop over time throughout SS along with all of the other characters, even his relationship with Zelda changes. Something that you don’t see with BotW at all. One of the key differences in this department between SS and all the others is that Zelda is actually Links’s childhood friend in this game which helps set even more of an impact. It’s no longer the “oh, will you save my daughter the princess for Hyrule plz Link?â€. It’s more so “yo, your childhood friend who you were gonna smash got kidnapped, but also she’s super important so thx bye imma just stand here while you do the hard workâ€. I won’t go into too much detail but the main protagonist is actually very good in terms of story and I loved every single moment.
Look at him flipping his hair making sure it doesn't get ruined
You can purchase SS on The Wii U Eshop for $20 btw, which I highly recommend doing, otherwise it’s close to $40-$50 for a physical copy for the Wii.
So if Nintendo could remake SS for the Switch that’d be great and I’d be very happy.
Also I’m in the midst of finishing TP so there’s very little mention of that because I haven’t finished it. I will probably tweak this blog once I have finished it in the following weeks or so.
loz is a nice series-- never been able to get into it that much because of the length & amount of side quests, therefore i've never finished a game. SOMEDAY THOUGH.

I've only ever finished one before: A Link to the Past, for the SNES.
(I played Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask for the N64, as well, but never finished either of them.)
