We are now very close to Christmas Eve. During this time, a very polemic topic that is discussed is consumerism during Christmas. Companies focus their marketing on the sale of Christmas products (toys, decorations, etc.).
Indeed, during this time, it is like a golden period for toy companies. They manufacture, sell, and make a lot of money.
Many people are concerned about consumerism during Christmas time. Honestly, I don’t blame them. There are some real issues with this.
For example, child labor and exploitation. There are many serious cases of companies using children to manufacture their products. Also, during Christmas offers, there are many toys that are made by exploited children. Additionally, there are also adults who are exploited by factories, with very low wages, terrible working conditions, and no labor benefits.
Another concern for those who criticize Christmas consumerism is that it goes against the true Christmas spirit (which is about family, love, friendship, and fraternity). However, I couldn’t disagree more with this statement. Because yes, there are exploited workers and children, but there are also many other workers in good conditions, with fair wages, good working conditions, and labor benefits.
When we buy and enjoy these products, we can help these workers receive a fair reward for all their hard work throughout the year, so they can have a delicious Christmas dinner and spend quality time with their families!
So, the real problem here is not consumerism, but exploitation and child labor.
What can we do? Well, we can demand that companies provide fair wages and conditions for their employees, and also protest against exploitation and child labor.
The governments of the nations are also important in this fight. They must be firm against the bad practices of companies and help workers enjoy the fruits of their labor.
Also, if a company is exploiting and mistreating its workers, we must boycott it. We must know how the products we buy at Christmas are made. And also, always demand transparency from companies.
We must care for the well-being and prosperity of everyone, so we can uphold the Christmas values of generosity, family, love, fraternity, and Christianity! (Or Santa, if you prefer a secularized Xmas)
I wish a very merry Christmas to everyone in Paint!
I'm actually atheist.
But I anyways love Christmas.
This is a time to think about the things we lived in the year.
Celebrate with our family and friends.
Celebrate our succeses, and learn about our failures during the year.
Merry Christmas to you too!
