Anyone reading this blog should have a basic understanding of the Pc game Portal.
Portal is based off of a game called Narbacular Drop. Narbacular Drop was a game made by students at the Digi-Pen Institute (a college for game makers) and invented the using of portals to solve puzzles. It featured many elements that were taken and put in Portal like portals themselves. When VALVe saw Narbacular Drop they came up with portal and hired the Narbacular Drop development team to start work on Portal.
VALVe didn't have much time to make Portal a seperate storyline so they rehired Marc Laidlaw, the writer of one of their other series, Half-life, and tied Portal's story into Half-life's. (a big indicator of the 2 stories coming together is in the lyrics of still alive and the power point you see through a window later in the game in the offices that implies that Apeture is compeating with Black Mesa).
Cake being the "reward" for finishing the test chambers was originally a joke brought forth in a brainstorming session and eventually became part of the game when VALVe decided that Portal should have some added humor. "the cake" actually resembles a black forest cake a member of the team saw in a near by bakery
When looking for a voice actor for GLaDOS, VALVe needed someone who could sing (for the song still alive). The voice actors name is Ellen McLain. She is a trained operatic singer. In an interview she said she had never played a video game in her life but looked forward to playing Portal. To practice her GLaDOS voice acting, GLaDOS's lines were put through a text-to-speech program and Ellen mimiced the monotonous tone and only added emotion to her voice when it was needed (mostly the boss fight lines)
The companion cube was put in the game to symbolize the attachment people get to inanimate objects when they are isoated for long periods of time. the heart on it was added for a funnier look at this idea
It makes sense. Originally it was just a plain ol' cube, but testers left it behind and got stuck. So they turned it into the companion cube so people would realise it was important.
