Hey everyone! This is the second installment in my Disneyland Historical Series, feedback is welcome!
Formula Rossa Presents:
The Magic Of Disneyland:
THE PEOPLE MOVER
1967-1995
One of the most iconic rides of the past 1/2 century in Disneyland's history, The People Mover opened as part of the "New Tomorrowland" expansion of 1967. Goodyear Tires sponsored the ride from its opening to 1981.
The system used four car trains that transported riders around Tomorrowland and over attractions such as Autopia, and the Submarine Voyage's lagoon.
The system was actually made as a serious prototype for a future transportation system for a city. The ride was propelled by tires placed every 9 feet in the track.
Early in the ride's history, a tunnel was added to the ride's track above the "America Sings" attraction (now ."Innoventions" uses the space once ocupied by America Sings). The Hyperspeed Tunnel featured projections of racecars speeding past. When the movie "TRON" was released, this tunnel changed into the "World Of Tron - Featuring The Game Grid" and had projections of Lighcycles racing by on all sides.
The People Mover closed in 1995, and a sign announcing a new attraction appeared.
The "Rocket Rods" opened in 1998 as part of another Tomorrowland Expansion. This attraction was a high speed journey, using the People Mover's track.
However, due to lack of funding, and mechanical problems, the ride closed in September of 2000, with a sign announcing it's return in Spring of 2001.
It Never Returned.
Fans of the ride continue to ask Disney to re-open the attraction. Sadly, the high speeds of the Rocket Rods have damaged the track beyond repair.
In the summer of 2010, a high ranking Disney official announced the possible return of the People Mover, but said it would not return in it's original form due to new saftey laws.
No date has been announced for the ride's re-opening, and no visable signs of work have been seen.
