The Magic Of Disneyland:
THE SUBMARINE VOYAGE
1969-1995
Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage
2007-????
The Submarine Voyage opened in the 1969 "Transportation" expansion of Tomorrowland which also included the People Mover, Autopia, and the famous Monorail.
The attraction itself is housed in a cleverly disguised building underneath Autopia. Passengers boarded on of 6 submarines painted to look like nuclear subs (in actuality, they were diesel). The sub would then pass through an outside lagoon, through a waterfall, and into the show building.
Inside, guest were treated to a voyage acros the oceans, past undersea volcanos, icebergs, and even a mermaid or two! The ride simulates diving using bubble glass.
Mermaid Cast Members used to swim in Submarine Voyage's lagoon, until health risks due to the diesel fumes were discovered.
Submarine Voyage closed in 1998, in preperation for a re-theme for the upcoming Disney film: "Atlantis: The Lost Empire". Sadly, the move flopped in the box office and the Submarine Voyage remained closed.
The Lagoon sat empty from 1999-2006.
In 2007, the Submarine Voyage re-opened with a finding Nemo theme. New technology and updated subs helped breath new life into the attraction.
The new darkride scenes for the attraction left little hints refering back to the original attraction's sets.
Today, it remains one of the most popular rides in Tomorrowland, rarely dropping below a two hour wait!
