I woke up the morning, not thinking about selection. That is, until a German SS Soldier with the Notorious Dr. Mangel with his Notepad in hand. We were all told to stand in a line. Up first, my friend Milia. She was pale, thin, and dried up. She walked weakly to the man.
Dr. Mangel wrote her number on the board. What? Was she selected?
A few guys were selected, and some passed. I was next. I shook with fear. I remember my dad's words: "They are making it hard on us, if you are selected, you are up for extermination. I want you to act as strong as you can. Act like you can handle being here. Don't be afraid! Just remember! Act strong!" How could I NOT be afraid if I could be killed, anyways ; I run to the man. I heard the words "No, To weak, To weak" and I ran out. I spoke with my friend Milia. She said she was selected. "Did I make it?" I said hastily. She said "How could they if you were running fast!" She gave a weak smile. "Did you pass?" I said briefly. She sighed and replied "No, I didn't."
I stared at her, blank in the face. "No way; you can--." She interrupted "It might be better for me. Instead of being in this Hell hole."
I sighed and agreed. In fact, she was right? Our life was already ruined. Why do we need to stay here? But, I was simply not courageous as she was. I didn't even want to think about committing suicide.
The soup that night tasted bare. The next day was the first day of winter, Days were short, nights were long ; days were hard to handle. The morning I woke up, we were given winter clothes, which helped just a little.
A hour before attendance, another SS German Soldier instructed the selected numbers to stay put, and he shouted them. I looked at my friend the whole time. So, they followed the SS, and we were instructed to the Gallows. I was extremely worried.
At the gallows, 5 other men, with my friend! I was going to see my friend get hanged?! I look as the German Hanger spook with a Vacuous voice. In 5 minutes, it was over. My friend was dead.
That night, the soup tasted of Milia.
I was eating when I remembered something. Where was my father? After dinner ; I could not find my father. Did he die too?! I ran everywhere I could to find him ; Until, the Curfew bell rang. It was too late, I had to wait until tomorrow. Also, if he is still alive, is he worrying about me?
Chapter 7
--The Hospital--
I noticed my arm was starting to swell that night. I was sent to the hospital block. I went in with not a lack of thought. The hospital block was like heaven. I was under a white sheet, and the doctor examined me. The doctor was a prison Jew! I was sent to immediate operation ; except I didn't know what was happening. I was put to a deep sleep.
When I woke up ; I was able to ask the doctor that I was thirsty, and he got me water. And wait. What happened to my arms, I can't feel them!
