April 20th is a somewhat important, but not in the way some of you are thinking. No, today [or yesterday depending on when this is posted] is known for two historical reasons;
1) Today was the birthday of Adolf Hitler.
2) Today the anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting that occured on April 20th, 1999 [thanks for the correction, Hull].
I'm going going to be talking mostly about the latter of the two.
On this day 12 years ago, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, 2 Columbine students who were costantly bullied, brought a gun and a "hate list", a list of classmates who had bullied them. They found each person on the hate list and shot them and anyone who got in the way, including teachers. During the massacre, the two shooters approached a senior named Cassie Bernall and asked her if she believed in God. After responding "yes", they shot her. After the tragic incident had ended and they were caught, both Eric and Dylan commited suicide.
Hopefully this has enlightened some of you who have not heard of this tragedy.
The first one they had shot was Racheal Elizibith scott. Look up Racheal's challange n research it then ask yourself "Do you accept the challange?". Btw she had a list of people who were bullied and stuff who she wanted to help. They were on the list.
@Craig: Why does that come off as quite stereotypical?
@Hull: I watched that when I was 3, I believe. My grandmother thought it'd be a good movie for a 3y/o to watch.
And you're quite correct, April 20th, 1999. Here's a segment from Wikipedia I feel should be noted;
"After Harris complained of depression, anger, and suicidal thoughts at a meeting with his psychiatrist, he was prescribed the anti-depressant Zoloft. He complained about restlessness and a lack of concentration to his doctor, and in April was switched to a similar drug, Luvox.[13] At the time of his death, Harris had therapeutic Luvox levels in his system. Some analysts, such as psychiatrist Peter Breggin, have argued that one or both of these medications may have contributed to Harris's actions. Breggin claimed that side-effects of these drugs include increased aggression, loss of remorse, depersonalization and mania.[14]"
The shooting had to have been in 1999, unless I am horribly mistaken. The murderers called themselves the "Trenchcoat Mafia", claiming inspiration from the scene in The Matrix where the heroes stormed the building that contained the agents. That movie came out in early 1999, when I was a senior in high school.
