You wake up, but you feel numb. You try to get up, but your body won't listen. You're screaming in your head to move, but you just can't, you're paralyzed. You try to open your mouth to call for help, but nothing comes out. You suddenly start to feel very frightened and your heart starts racing. You feel like someone is sitting on your chest and you can't breath. You start seeing things and hearing noises, usually bad. Your head starts to feel really heavy like you're tired, but for some reason you're scared to go back to sleep because, you feel that if you do, you won't wake up. Then BOOM, you either fall back asleep immediately or suddenly you're able to move again. If you have experienced this you're either demon possessed, or you have Sleep Paralysis.
But don't be scared. If you have this condition, in my experience with this, I find it helpful to sleep on your stomach or side. DO NOT sleep on your back, I hear this makes it more likely to happen. BUT when it occurs don't fight it. Stay calm and remain relaxed, because the harder you fight the longer it will take to regain mobility. Do not panic because this will make it harder to breathe. The reason why it's hard to breathe is because you are paralyzed, your musles are not moving, so your chest does not move with your lungs. When/if you start to hallucinate, know that it is your imagination and none of it is real. If you start to feel tired, don't fight the sleep, nothing will happen to you.
Sleep Paralysis occurs when you wake up during the REM cycle. Your body paralyzes itself during this cycle so you don't act out your dreams. (There is a condition were a persons body does not paralyze itself, and they act out their dreams violently.)This also explains hallucinations. Your body is in the dream state, so you're simply seeing your dream in reality. Hopefully I helped somoeone. Following these tips I have been able to avoid Sleep Paralysis.
The thing were you feel like you way a ton and hear screaming may be sleep paralysis, but I'm not sure. Did you have any trouble breathing when this happened?
when i am sick even if it's a little cold i wake up about 5 times a night and every time i do wake up i can move but i feel like i way a ton, and i hear screaching.
once i fell asleep at the pharmacy while waiting for medicine and i sleep walked and knocked over a lot of merchandise(wich i don't remember but my brother and mom told me), then when i was in the car i heard the screaming and i had hallucinations that the car was crashing and flipping out of control (wich i do remember). Is this sleep paralysis.
This happens to me once or twice a month. My idiot doctor said it was due to poor blood surculation. -.-'
At least I know what I have now and how to deal with it.
I wish I could wake up all dressed and sitting on the table with breakfast on the table XD
That would be awesome. Sleep cooking (I've done chores in my sleep)
I have those dreams when you fall alseep for half a second then jump out of them. My next door neighbors(who are very superstitious) say that they're good luck.
Chuck, go out and get a lottery ticket.
NOW.
Interesting topic to pick, I just read a story involving sleep paralysis, and was going to look up an article on Wikipedia about it. +1
I have plenty of sleep disorders. Sometimes I'll keep on sleeping if I'm not waken up.
I also get RLS really bad if I'm tired. I used to have night terrors as a young child.
Slept walk a few times. How do I remember? Well, I woke up while walking down to the barn one time, and another time I woke up fully dressed laying on the couch.
I don't have hypnophobia, but I do feel uneasy sleeping sometimes.
And almost every night, just as I fall asleep, I will literally jump myself awake.
I never lay on my back. So sleep paralyis seems unlikely for me. But it sounds scary. It reminds me of the painting called "The Nightmare". That painting scares me. It really creeps me out.
I feel left out, as I've never experienced this... I hate sleeping on my back though. Every time I do, I get some crazy friggin' dreams. I'm talking crap that scared me when I was younger, and still does today. So, I typically avoid sleeping that way as a general rule.
My REM cycle comes slowly sometimes so I sleep before I'm paralyzed and I act out the most violent things then wake myself up by screaming... It's only scary because I remember what was happening. I've been paralzed while awake too though, it sucks, I usually have this reaccuring nightmare so it was really scary.
AND hallucinations happen but only the noise gets through.
Ive had so many hallucinations in my life i know what it feels like and my advice is too stay calm and relaxed. I always tell somone that im having one and it alwys helps.
I've woken like that before, it was strange because instead of being able to move all at once, it was slow and I got feeling in my hands, feet, arms, legs, ect slowly. Never slept on my back again.
I only experienced this once after I awoke during a long distance trip in a car. I was unable to move for a few minutes, then I simply fell back into normal sleep.
