Three Days. Three days until shes married. Three days before she dissapears from my life forever. But I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm John Freeman. And the 'she' I'm talking about is Claire. She's my best friend and the love of my life. She never really knew it but I always had been in love with her. We had been friends since grade-school and through out collage. She always wanted helped others, but she was very shy and felt defenseless. When I met her I wanted to be there for her, and to protect her from anything that might have harmed her. But meeting, my dream girl was a little diffrent than what I had expected. She was my tutor for science in the eigth grade, when my grades had plummeted. We became friends and our bond had grown and grown until I finaly relized how wonderful she was. We even went to a dance together, but 'just as friends' as she would said. I always liked her and I had a huntch she liked me too. But I guess none of us had the courage to actualy say it. I had it in my head once or twice about asking her to be my girlfriend, but I always talked myself out of it. One day I actually decided to ask her, but for almost a year, I had lost contact with her, ever since I rented out my extra room in my apartment to my 'friend' Chris. Chris was what you could hardly call a friend. He was messy, had a ton of video games and doesn't have a job, but could afford to pay the rent and his whole pile of video games. I'm guessing he gets a check from his parents because he's always exited to get mail from them. He basicly always a jerk, and annoying, but their are some times were he can really suprise me. But enough about that, this is were my story begins.
"So did you hear some CEO of some company is getting married in a few weeks?" Chris asked me. "No." I replied. "I really don't care about stuff like that." "Well it says here on 'The Informer' Todd Sherry and Claire Dawson are getting married in three weeks..." "WHAT?" I yelled. "Todd Sherry and Claire Dawson." Chris repeated, in a slow voice, as if I was an idiot.
My heart was racing. I picked up my cell phone and dialed Claire. "Hello? John, hi! Wow, I haven't talked to you in so long!" She said. "H-hi Claire!" I was trembling. "So did you hear, I'm getting married!" She sounded so happy. "I'm sorry I havn't talked to you in a while, its just things have been so busy." "Oh, it's alright, I havn't really been up to much lately." I said "So, I want to invite you to meet Todd, my fiancee.. Since you are my best friend and all." "S-sure Claire." I said "When c-can meet him?" "John, are you okay? You sound kinda weird..." "Oh, right, I uh, I'm kinda cold, AC is up." I lied "You don't even have an AC, its burning hot in this dump!" Chris yelled. "Um, who was that?" Claire asked. "Oh no one, so when can I meet your fiancée?" I had calmed down a bit. "Oh how about Saturday at Greenfield park, around 1 o'clock?" she said. "Sure!" I said falsely. "Alright see you then!" I hung up. I felt dead inside. "Was that the girl that's getting married? Did you two have a little thing before? Huh, Huh?" Chris said. He was cracking up. "It wasn't so much of a thing, it was just, you know friends!" I said in defense. He started making a kissing face, like a third grader. I had a really bad trait that my face gets real red at these kind of times. "God, your so immature you know that?" I yelled. "You're more like a little brother than a roommate."
On Saturday afternoon, as I started my car, I had so many questions in my head. How will he look like? Does he look better than me? How will he speak? Does he have a deeper voice than me? Darn me, I told myself. I hadn't even had taken a glance at the magazine. I had been so worried about today. God, I'm so stupid, I told myself. Suddenly my phone started to ring. I picked it up. It was Claire. "Hey John! So sorry, but I can't make it to the park! It's just my mom is in the hospital. I hope you can understand. Todd is already there so you can meet him. Bye!" She hadn't even let me talk. Once I had made it I realized Claire didn't even tell me how Todd looked like or where he was. So I just decided to see maybe I could recognize this guy. While I was walking I bumped into this guy, half a foot taller than me. He looked liked he worked out in a gym everyday. He also had this thick mustache. "Hey punk! Get out of my way! Do you know who your messing with!?" He picked me up by my shirt. "Hey! Hey, man put me down!" I yelled. He walked over to the Greenfield lake. It wasn't much a lake, but basically a glorified pond, but I didn't know how to swim. "Down you go!" he said and threw me in. As I started to try and swim back, I saw he had already walked away. "I guess he's not showing." I heard him say. Once I made it out and back into my car I decided not to call the cops. I had enough trouble today. Once I made it back home I went to my bed and sunk to sleep. "So how'd it go?" was all I heard from Chris. The next day I had realized I went to sleep on the same wet clothing.
I woke up to my phone ringing, it was Claire, yet again. "Hey, I'm so so sorry about yesterday, it's just my my mother got sick and I had to visit her." "No problem Claire, I hope your mom feels better soon." I said "Thanks John, your such a sweet guy. So, I'm guessing you didn't meet Todd?" she said "Nope, just kinda got thrown into the lake." I replied. "Oh my gosh, are you alright?" "Yeah, but never mind that. When can I meet him?" I said anxiously "Okay, well, were having a pre-wedding party on Friday around 6, so you can come then!" "Sure, see you at the party!" and I hung up. "Did some one say..." I heard Chris say "PARTAY!" he yelled. I slid on the floor in a button-down shirt, clip on tie, boxers and socks. I wasn't really suprised, since thats his favorite outfit to lounge around in. "So when's this party I hear of?" Chris asked. Chris was never one to pay attention, or listen at all. But one thing he could pay attention to was parties. "Friday, and your not coming." I said "Aww, come on! I'll be a riot! And maybe I could impress your lady-friend for ya' and maybe make one of my own, if you know what I mean." He said and grinned at me. "Ugh..." I sighed. "Look, she's not my 'lady-friend', she's just a friend." "Yeah a friend you wanna make-out with!" he said, like it was a joke. Chris didn't even know what I was going through. But then again I'm pretty sure he's never been with a girl long enough to fall in love, or even make a stable relationship.
So on Friday, I got ready to go to the party. "So, do I look good or what?" Chris asked, while looking in a minnor with a cheap suit he put on. "Look, we talked about this! Your not coming!" I said. "Whatever, didn't want to go to your stupid party anyways!" he yelled and slammed his door to his room. Sometimes I wonder of he's a three year-old trapped in a 19 year-old's body.
Well after thinking about it, I finally got the nerves to go to the party. I got in my car, and started up the engine. "Hey, hey wait up for me!" Chris yelled. "I thought we talked about this, your not coming!" I said. "But hey, your boring, I could make the party fun!" she replied. "Look" I said "If you come, you'll likely ruin it for me and everyone else!" "You know what, I don't need you permission! I'm going!" he said angrily. But as soon as he tried to get into the car I backed away and drove off. "Aww crap!" he yelled. He tried to run but he stopped halfway. He couldn't catch up, and all he had was a bike, so I didn't need to worry.
"John! So glad you could make it!" Claire said as I arrived. She gave me a hug, and we both walked in. I couldn't belive my eyes when we walked in. Claire told Todd had rented out this huge building for their party. When we were in the main room, it was crowded with people. At least 200 people were there. It was basicly a huge club, with people dancing and everyone just going wild. "Well, I didn't really aprove, but for I the things Todd has done, but I couldn't really say no..." Clarie said, well really she yelled because of how loud it was. "Oh there he is now!" I walked up to him, he was dancing like a maniac with a bunch of other people next to him.
"Hey you must be Claires little friend! Uhh, James is'nt it? Hey hav'nt I seen you around before?" he said light-heartedly. When he turned around I immediately relized who he was. He was the jerk who threw me in the lake.
"It's John..." I said very seriously. "And yes I've seen you, remeber at the lak-"
He cut me off saying "Oh yeah, why didn't you show up? Anyways, I was there and you should have seen this, some moron bumps into me and steps on my $300 shoes! Can you belive it?" "Yeah look, th-" I tried to say but he cut me off again. "So I say to him, outta the way punk, and shove him into the lake!" he says with a laugh. "Todd! You did'nt tell me about this! Funny you should mention because..." Claire said relizing it was me he threw in. "Because I'm the 'moron' who you threw in the lake!" I yelled, well it was so loud, it wasn't much a yell. "I can't belive this Claire." I said to her as I walked off. "Wait, wait, wait!" she said "Trust me he's a nice guy, you just hve to get to know him a bit. Please don't go!" "Look Claire, I'm sorry, but I have to leave." As I exited the club, I saw Chris come out of a taxi. "How the heck did you-" I paused I did'nt even want to know. "I found the address on the internet!" he said happily. "Well were leaving." I told him "Please don't!" Claire said. I grabbed Chris and dragged him into the car. "HEY HEY WAIT!" he yelled. "No! All the chicks!" he said. What a pig. As we drove off he just kept yelling at me to pull over and to stop. He even opened the door while I was driving and he almosy got hit by a SUV. But none of it mattered. Because in a week Claire going to marry one of the biggest jerks in history. When we got back into the apartment I went inside and was just fruatrated not knowing what to do. Chris just got upset, but then ran all the way back to the party. At 11 PM I got a phone call from Chris telling me he was too late and needed a ride back home becuase he spent the rest of his money on the first cab ride. I told him to walk.
